What kind of ticket do I need and where can I get it?
Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava, Sipoo and Kirkkonummi form an integrated public transport area where traveling is easy and affordable. You can travel by bus, commuter train, tram, Metro and Suomenlinna ferry.
Internal, regional or extended regional ticket?
- An internal ticket entitles you to travel within one zone. Journeys within Helsinki, Vantaa. Espoo and Kauniainen, and Kirkkonummi are one-zone journeys. Kerava and Sipoo form one zone.
- A regional ticket entitles you to travel in Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa.
- A two-zone extended regional ticket entitles you to travel in Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava, Sipoo and Kirkkonummi.
- A three-zone extended regional ticket entitles you to travel within the whole area.
One-zone tickets cannot be used as part payment for regional or extended regional journeys, i.e. for each journey, you need to purchase a ticket valid for the entire journey.
Season ticket or value?
There are several types of tickets available for different travel needs. Most of the tickets used in the Helsinki metropolitan area public transport are paid with a Travel Card. Loading a season ticket is recommended to all regular users of public transport, for example commuters and students.
Pensioners and students are entitled to reduced rate tickets under certain conditions. Children travel at a discounted rate and under 7’s travel for free.

Loading value is a good option for occasional users of public transport. Value tickets bought with a Travel Card are cheaper than single tickets bought from the driver or conductor.
Single ticket or day ticket?
A day ticket is handy if you need to make several journeys during one day or several days. You can choose the number of days for your ticket from 1 to 7 days. There are also 2-hour tickets and Suomenlinna tickets valid for 12 hours. Day tickets loaded on single-charge cards are available from most of the locations selling public transport tickets.
Single tickets can be conveniently purchased from ticket machines. On buses, trams and commuter trains drivers or conductors sell single tickets and one-day tickets. The expiry time is printed on the ticket.
When you purchase a ticket from the driver, please have the correct change. The driver does not have to accept bills larger than EUR 20.
