Wheelchairs and walkers

On low-floor buses, a person who uses a wheelchair or walker and has a period ticket does not have to show the card to the card reader when boarding through the centre doors. If assistance is required in buying a ticket or showing the Travel Card to the reader, fellow passengers can always be asked for help. If a passenger in a wheelchair has not been able to pay for the journey, an inspector will not charge a penalty fare but will show the Travel Card to the card reader or sell the passenger a single ticket.

On low-floor trams and local trains, Travel Cards can be used in a normal way, as card readers are available close to all doors. It is equally easy to use the Travel Card on the metro.

A passenger in a wheelchair and one companion are entitled to free travel on public transport in the Helsinki metropolitan area if the passenger has the required pass. On Vantaa’s internal transport services, all disabled persons using wheelchairs are entitled to travel without tickets on low-floor vehicles.

Mobility scooters with separate handlebars are not transported on buses, trams or the metro because they do not fit in the space designated for wheelchairs.
