Travel smart

Our daily life often involves traveling from one place to another: we travel to work, school, shopping and recreation activities. We make several journeys of different lengths every day. How we make those journeys has various impacts on, for example, economy, health and the environment.

Mobility management means promoting sustainable mobility for example with the help of marketing and communications. The aim is to encourage people to reduce driving alone in their cars and increase walking, cycling, use of public transport, car sharing, ride sharing and economic driving. Development and coordination of sustainable modes of transport so that they are easy and attractive to use and combine are also part of mobility management.

Urban structure is a key factor affecting the need to travel and modes of travel. HSL is responsible for transport system planning in the Helsinki region, which includes influencing land use and town planning in the region’s municipalities. Increase in traffic can be curbed by locating new residential and employment areas and services close to existing public transport services.

HSL promotes smart travel by providing public transport services, marketing as well as working together with other organizations that promote or implement sustainable modes of transport. Mobility management is carried out also with employers, educational institutions and other organizations and businesses that generate traffic.
