Bicycles can be carried on trains outside peak hours

Bicycles can be carried on commuter trains free of charge outside peak hours, provided there is space.  HSL trials free transport of bicycles on commuter trains this year. During peak hours, Mon-Fri 7am-9am and 3pm-6pm, bicycles are not allowed on trains. On the metro bicycles can be carried free of charge, provided there is space.

Even outside peak hours the train vestibules may be so crowded that it is not possible to take a bicycle on board. Passengers with wheelchairs and prams take priority in these situations.

On commuter trains, bicycles can be carried free only within the HSL area and the owner of the bicycle must have an HSL ticket. If the cyclist uses a VR’s ticket e.g. when traveling to Kerava or Kirkkonummi, a separate fee is charged for the bicycle.

We would like to remind cyclists to be considerate towards other passengers. Please stay close to your bicycle during the journey and take care that it does not interfere with other passengers. At stations, walk your bicycle and use a lift instead of escalators for safety reasons.

Bicycles are not allowed on buses and trams. On the Suomenlinna ferry bicycles can be carried for a fee.

Cycling tips from the Journey Planner

The best cycling routes in Helsinki, Espoo, Kerava, Kirkkonummi and Vantaa are available from the Journey Planner for Cycling. The Planner allows you to search for cycling and walking routes either by clicking on the departure point and destination on the map or by entering street addresses.

The service gives you a route that follows cycle paths, if one exists. You can also search for the shortest possible route or for routes that favor asphalt or graveled paths.
