Over one million euros in environmental bonuses to bus operators this year

In 2022, we will pay out about EUR 1.1 million in environmental bonuses to bus operators for cutting emissions. The bonuses will be paid to Helsingin Bussiliikenne Oy and Oy Pohjolan Liikenne Ab for using biodiesel.

This year we will pay out in total EUR 1,076, 175 in environmental bonuses. The bonuses will be paid to Helsingin Bussiliikenne Oy and Oy Pohjolan Liikenne Ab for using biodiesel. Biodiesel is produced from waste material or residues.

The bonuses are awarded through a bidding process. The aim is to encourage bus operators to cut emissions. The bonuses allow us to compensate the operators for costs incurred by measures to reduce emissions.

“Our goal is to reduce local and carbon emissions from bus services by over 90 percent from the 2010 levels by 2025. Emissions are significantly reduced by switching to a renewable biofuel,” says acting Director of Department Johanna Wallin.

In 2022, buses will use 7.19 million liters of biodiesel. This amount of biofuel will reduce carbon emission from bus services procured by HSL by 11,569 tons, nitrogen oxides by 7.9 tons and fine particles by 313 kilos.
