New readers gradually replacing the old ones

We will overhaul our tickets and payment methods and upgrade our backend systems during 2024–2025. The first thing we do is replace card readers on public transport and at stations. Tickets are purchased on the new card readers as before with value on the HSL card. Contactless payment will be introduced later.

We started piloting the new card readers in March. We tested the performance and reliability of the new card readers with a few test readers at some stations and on different modes of transport before starting installations on a larger scale in June. We update information about the progress of the installations on our website: hsl.fi/en/new-reader.

How to use the new card reader

Tickets are purchased in the same way as at the current card readers: first, you select the zones, then you show your HSL card to the reader. Contactless payment will be introduced later.

On the new card reader, the zone buttons are displayed on two screens in zones B, C and D. The current zone is marked by a red pin icon. You can move between the screens using the arrow on the right side of the screen.

For instructions on how to use the new card reader, see hsl.fi/en/new-reader.

New card readers are the first step towards making travel smoother

The new card readers are part of an extensive project to overhaul tickets and payment methods and upgrade our backend systems. We are creating a completely new account-based ticketing and payment system and replacing about 4,200 card readers on public transport vehicles and at stations. According to the current schedule, all card readers will be replaced in 2024.

The card readers need to be replaced to enable the introduction of contactless payment, where you can pay single adult fares by showing your Visa or Mastercard to the reader.

Our reform aims to make payment and travel easy and smooth. Digital transactions and purchases will be made easier, and more extensive self-service options will be available to those who want them. Tickets can be purchased and HSL cards can be topped up at kiosks and supermarkets as before.
