Tram route 13 to start on 12 August – the tram network will be extended to Kalasatama and Sompasaari

Helsinki will get a new tram route on Monday 12 August when tram 13 starts. The route connects Kalasatama and Pasila. The termini of the route are at Maistraatintori in Länsi-Pasila and in Nihti at the southern tip of Sompasaari.

HSL decided to start the service on 12 August after receiving information from the Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd, which operates the route, that the prerequisites for launching the route are in place: there are enough vehicles and drivers, track work and other construction work have been completed, and all necessary infrastructure is in place.

The first service on the new route will depart at 5.27am on Monday 12 August from Nihti. The tram will run every ten minutes during the daytime and at peak times. The detailed timetables of the route will shortly be available in the Journey Planner at hsl.fi. The route will be operated with Artic and articulated trams.

The new tram route will provide a brand new crosstown transport link between two public transport nodes. The new service will improve transport links to Pasila not only from Kalasatama but also from, for example, Hermanni and the southern parts of Arabianranta. When the Kruususillat tramway connecting Laajasalo and Hakaniemi is completed towards the end of the 2020s, it will be possible to travel by tram from Pasila to Kruunuvuorenranta in Laajasalo without changing services.
