We are investigating the demand for short public transport journeys in Punavuori, Eira, Hernesaari, Alppila, and Vallila in spring 2025. If you live in one of these postcode areas, are logged in to the HSL app, and have completed strong authentication, you can purchase short journey adult single tickets, available only during the study period from 12 February to 8 June 2025. Initially, the tickets were valid for 10 minutes, but on 15 April, we extended the validity period to 20 minutes. You need HSL app version 6.6.0 or later. We recommend always using the latest app version. In app version 6.6.1, a technical error affecting payment methods for the ticket was fixed. In version 6.7.1, released on 15 April, the ticket name was changed to '20-minute ticket' due to the extension of its validity period.

What is the study on the demand for short public transport journeys about?

Short journey single tickets are available only to a limited group of customers as part of a study to more accurately determine the demand for short public transport journeys in practice. The ticket is not a permanent addition to HSL’s range of tickets; rather, it is a tool to find out how many short public transport journeys are made during the study period.

How can I purchase a short journey single ticket?

You must be eligible to participate in the study based on your place of residence, i.e., you live in one of the selected postcode areas (00120, 00150, 00510, or 00550).

Additionally, you must have at least app version 6.6.0. We recommend always using the latest HSL app version. In app version 6.6.1, a technical error affecting payment methods for the ticket was fixed. On 15 April, we released version 6.7.1, in which the name of the ticket was hanged to '20-minute ticket' due to the extension of its validity period.

  • If you already have installed the HSL app (version 6.6.0 or later) and are logged in, you should see the short journey ticket among the tickets available to you on the app. Please check your information in the app to make sure that you have strongly authenticated.
  • If you have not installed the HSL app or you don’t have an HSL account,  you must first download the HSL app (version 6.6.0 or later), create an HSL account, and log in. Additionally, you must authenticate strongly. After this, the short journey adult single ticket will automatically appear in the range of tickets available to you on the HSL app. Download the app
  • NB! In version 6.7.1 (or later) of the HSL app and later, the short journey ticket is named ‘20-minute ticket’. In older versions of the app, it is still named '10-minute ticket,' even though the tickets are valid for 20 minutes starting from 15 April. 

To purchase a short journey single ticket, you must allow us to collect your travel data and link it to your HSL account. The app will prompt you to provide your permission, if necessary, when you purchase the ticket.

Please note that the availability of the app update may vary depending on your device or operating system. This means that the latest app update may not appear for all users at the same time. It usually takes about a week for the update to be available to all customers.

How do I use the short journey single ticket?

Starting 15 April, the ticket entitles you to a 20-minute journey only on buses, trams, and light rail in the entire HSL area. The ticket is not valid for the Metro, trains, or the Suomenlinna ferry.

You must buy the ticket in advance and activate it separately. You must activate the ticket before boarding a bus or tram. The ticket must be valid for the entire duration of your journey.  

You can use the ticket across the entire HSL area, it automatically covers all zones. You do not need to select fare zones when buying the ticket.

How much does the short journey single ticket cost?

The price of the ticket is determined by the area of residence, as we want to assess not only the demand for short public transport journeys but also the effect of price on travel behavior.

Why is the short journey ticket only valid on buses, trams, and light rail?

Since this is a study on the demand for short public transport journeys, we are focusing on buses, trams, and light rail. Therefore, the short journey ticket is not valid for the Metro, trains, or the Suomenlinna ferry as these are typically used for longer journeys.

What if the short journey ticket expires during the journey?

Before the short journey ticket expires, you must exit the vehicle or buy a new ticket. The new short journey ticket must be activated before the old one expires.

Why can’t I find the short journey ticket in the range of tickets on my app?

You may not be eligible to participate in the study based on your place of residence. The place of residence is determined by the population information system’s home municipality data.

You might not have completed strong authentication. This is necessary for us to verify your place of residence and for the ticket to appear in the range of tickets available to you on the HSL app. You can check your information in the app settings to see if you have authenticated strongly.

Please also check that you have app version 6.6.0 or newer.

Good to know

  • The short journey single tickets can be purchased only during the study period between 12 February and 8 June 2025. Initially, the tickets were valid for 10 minutes, but on 15 April, we extended the validity period to 20 minutes.
  • The ticket is personal, which means you cannot buy it for someone else.
  • You must activate the ticket within 24 hours of purchase. If you do not activate the ticket within this timeframe, it will be automatically activated when the 24-hour time limit is up. Once activated automatically, the ticket will be valid for 20 minutes (starting from 15 April), after which it will be used up and cannot be reactivated.
  • You can give feedback about short public transport journeys with the short journey ticket at hsl.fi/en/feedback. Select Tickets and payment, then Prices and ticket products, and 20-minute ticket, and you will be directed to a feedback form to give your feedback.

 

Updated on 14 February: information on the new app update 6.6.1, which will fix the technical issue affecting the payment methods available for buying 10-minute single tickets.

Update on 15 April: The validity period of 10-minute tickets has been extended to 20 minutes and a new HSL app version, 6.7.1, has been released. In app version 6.7.1, the name of the ticket has been changed from ‘10-minute ticket’ to ‘20-minute ticket.’

Update on 8 May: The study period has been extended by about three weeks until 8 June. The tickets will be withdrawn from sale on 9 June.
