What is the study on the demand for short public transport journeys about?

10-minute single tickets are available only to a limited group of customers as part of a study to more accurately determine the demand for short public transport journeys in practice. The ticket is not a permanent addition to HSL’s range of tickets; instead, it is a tool to find out how many short public transport journeys are made during the study period.

How can I purchase a 10-minute single ticket?

You must be eligible to participate in the study based on your place of residence, i.e., you live in one of the selected postcode areas (00120, 00150, 00510, or 00550).

To see the ticket in the HSL app’s menu, you must have at least app version 6.6.0, which was released on 12 February. A newer version 6.6.1 will be released soon. We recommend that you update the app as soon as the new version is made available. The new version will fix the technical issue affecting the payment methods available for buying 10-minute single tickets. Not all payment methods may work due to the issue. In the meanwhile, we recommend using your payment card to pay for the ticket. The issue has no effect on the functionality of the app. If you have not yet downloaded the update for version 6.6.0, you can download the next application version 6.6.1 once it is made available.

Please note that the availability of the app update may vary depending on your device or operating system. This means that the app update may not appear for all users at the same time. It usually takes about a week for the update to be available to all customers.

  • If you have already installed the HSL app (version 6.6.0), are logged in, and have strongly authenticated, you should see the 10-minute ticket among the tickets available to you on the app. Please check your information in the app to make sure that you have strongly authenticated.
  • If you have not installed the HSL app or you don’t have an HSL account, you must first download the HSL app (version 6.6.0), create an HSL account, and log in. To purchase a 10-minute single ticket, you must allow us to collect your travel data and link it to your HSL account. The app will prompt you to provide your permission, if necessary, when you purchase the ticket.

How do I use the 10-minute single ticket?

The ticket entitles you to a 10-minute journey on buses, trams, and light rail in the entire HSL area. The ticket is not valid for the Metro, trains, or the Suomenlinna ferry.

You must buy the 10-minute ticket in advance and activate it separately. You must activate the ticket before boarding a bus or tram. The ticket must be valid for the entire duration of your journey.

You can use the ticket anywhere in the HSL area and it automatically covers all fare zones. You do not need to select the zones when you buy the ticket.

How much does the 10-minute single ticket cost?

The price of the ticket is determined by your area of residence, as we want to assess not only the demand for short public transport journeys but also the effect of price on travel behavior.

  • Punavuori 00120 / €1.90
  • Eira, Hernesaari 00150 / €2.20
  • Alppila 00510 / €1.90
  • Vallila 00550 / €2.20

Why is the 10-minute ticket only valid on buses, trams, and light rail?

Since this is a study on the demand for short public transport journeys, we focus on buses, trams, and light rail. Therefore, the 10-minute ticket is not valid for the Metro, trains, or the Suomenlinna ferry as these are typically used for longer journeys. For instance, all ferry journeys take more than 10 minutes.

What if the 10-minute ticket expires during the journey?

Before the 10-minute ticket expires, you must exit the vehicle or buy a new ticket. The new 10-minute ticket must be activated before the old one expires.

Why can’t I find the 10-minute ticket in the range of tickets on my app?

You may not be eligible to participate in the study based on your place of residence. The place of residence is determined from the population information system’s home municipality data.

You might not have completed strong authentication. This is necessary for us to verify your place of residence and for the 10-minute ticket to appear in the range of tickets available to you on the HSL app. You can check your information in the app settings to see if you have authenticated strongly.

Please also check that you have app version 6.6.0 (or later).
