HSL to survey residents' travel habits in the autumn

HSL will survey the travel habits of the Helsinki metropolitan
area residents in the autumn. We hope residents will actively
participate in the survey. People who have been selected to
participate in the survey, will be sent a letter, background
information form and a travel diary into which s/he should write
down journeys made during one working day. Participants do not need
to return the form and travel diary; an interviewer will call the
participant and ask for the background information and journey
data. The interviews will be conducted between September and
December.

The survey covers the 14 Helsinki region municipalities, i.e.
Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kirkkonummi, Vihti,
Nurmijärvi, Tuusula, Kerava, Järvenpää, Hyvinkää, Mäntsälä,
Pornainen and Sipoo. The sample will include 14,200 permanent
residents born in 2005 or earlier.

The Helsinki Region Travel Survey 2012 is part of transport
system planning in the Helsinki region.  The aim of the study is to
get a thorough and reliable picture of residents' travel habits and
of the issues affecting people's travel.

By combining people’s background information, the journey
they’ve made and information about travel times and costs, HSL will
also be able to update mathematical models used to produce
forecasts of residents' travel.

A similar survey was conducted in the Helsinki region commuting
area in 2007-2008. A similar survey on a national level was
conducted in 2010-2011. In order for the survey to be successful,
it is important that the respondents write down all journeys made
during the survey day.
