HSL is overhauling its range of tickets – more flexibility with an account-based ticket system

HSL is firmly on the path towards an easier-to-use public transport system in a better-functioning urban region. In our public transport ticketing system, this means that the tickets available meet our customers’ needs even better. We are launching work to draw up a tariff model for the future.

We are currently using a variety of back-office systems for our ticket-selling channels; for example, the HSL card, the HSL app and the open sales interface each have their own systems. We are planning to change over to an account-based back-office system for all our sales channels.

When tickets are managed in a single back-office system, ticket products can be updated in accordance with customer needs in a more flexible manner. Daily or weekly price ceilings or contactless payment are some of the features that could be incorporated into an account-based system.

New ticket products and other features of the envisaged ticket system will be developed in close cooperation with customers. The aim is to develop a range of tickets that is optimally suited for customers’ needs. The changes required in ticket machines will also be examined in the course of the work.

The outline for the new tariff model and the range of tickets are expected to be ready in autumn 2021.

The account-based system will be jointly purchased by HSL and TVV LMJ Oy, a company providing ticket and payment systems for Finnish public transport authorities. Under this arrangement, the ticket system could also be developed on a nationwide basis and ticket products could be combined into country-wide trip chains.

Harmonizing the range of tickets purchased with the HSL card and HSL app the first step

Harmonizing the range of tickets available on the HSL card and the HSL app is the first step on the path towards the new ticket system. This will allow both HSL card and HSL app users to buy single tickets, day tickets for between 1 and 13 days, and season tickets for 14, 30 or 360 days. You could buy more than one season ticket for successive periods in a single purchase or set up an auto-renewing saver subscription.

The range of tickets available on the HSL card and the HSL app is currently not identical, which also makes it more difficult to introduce the new account-based system and adds to the confusion in the ticket system. With the harmonization, auto-renewing saver subscription will be made available to HSL card users, and 14-day season tickets will be added to the range of tickets available on the HSL app. In addition, day tickets will be added to the range of tickets available on the HSL card at a later stage.

The range of tickets available on the HSL card and the HSL app will be gradually harmonized as the necessary updates are made to  the ticket-sales systems. The first stage of the new account-based ticket system of HSL will also be based on these harmonized ticket products. We will make decisions on ticket prices in autumn 2020.

The new ticket products will be introduced in the new account-based back-office system and in all HSL sales channels at a later stage.
