HSL and Tieto signed a contract for the delivery of a new ticketing and information system

HSL will introduce a new ticketing and information system for
Helsinki region public transport by the end of 2015. The new system
modernizes the current Travel Card system and harmonizes
information systems. The aim is to enable the provision of
real-time passenger information on all Helsinki region public
transport.

HSL and Tieto signed a contract for the delivery of the new
system on 16 May. The contract covers the implementation of the new
ticketing and information system as well as maintenance for 5
years. The investment costs of the project are about EUR60 million
and the running costs over five years about EUR30 million.

The new ticketing and information system will be based on
open, service-centered architecture. It will enable continuous
development of the system, increasing of services as well as
keeping the system up-to-date in a flexible and cost-efficient
manner. HSL was one of the first in the world to implement the
current type of ticketing system based on contactless cards. With
the new project, HSL continues to pioneer new public transport
systems together with Tieto.

“When the ticketing and information systems are renewed at
the same time, we get a service package in which the systems can
utilize shared basic databases, the same components of the vehicle
system as well as the data produced by each other. In this way, we
can create a better service package, and achieve savings in both
investments and running costs", says Suvi Rihtniemi, the Executive
Director of HSL.

“Intelligent transport is seen at Tieto as significant part
of the development of information society. This is a significant
contract for Tieto because we want to be involved in developing new
services for public transport. Together with HSL, we are on the
front line in developing the new generation ticketing and
information system,” says Ari Järvelä, Executive Vice President,
Finland and the Baltic countries at Tieto.

The renewal of the systems will make the use of public
transport easier. More extensive real-time information and online
services will make the planning of journeys easier. Displays
installed on all buses showing the name of the next stop will help
passengers to manage the route. Satellite positioning also helps to
improve information in emergency situations and in cases of service
disruptions.
