Route change in brief

The Science Line 506 and bus 55K have been running via
Kumpulanmäki since autumn 2009. The Science Line runs Monday to
Friday 5am – 10pm, bus 55K runs to Kumpulanmäki 7am – 5pm.

It would be possible to further improve Kumpulanmäki public
transport links by rerouting the morning and evening services as
well as weekend services on route 55 to run via Väinö Auerin katu.
The change would benefit, in particular, those passengers using the
Kumpulanmäki bus stops for whom the Kustaa Vaasan tie bus stops are
difficult to use because of the steep hill. The change would also
improve bus service to Kumpula campus and sports center, as the bus
would run to Kumpulanmäki also on weekends. Also, it would be
easier to remember the route of the bus if all services used the
same route.

Kumpulanmäki has some 600 residents, and over 6,000 people work
or study on the campus.

The downsides are the narrowness of Väinö Auerin katu and
problems related to winter conditions. The steepest parts of the
road to Kumpulanmäki are heated to ease the running of buses
uphill. The route change would also increase noise and emission
levels in the area in the late evenings and on weekends.  Also, the
change would increase the travel time between Koskela and the city
center by about a minute.

If the decision on the route change is made in early spring, the
change could be implemented in August 2013, at the earliest.
