The share of low emission vehicles to rise to more than 60
percent
At the beginning of 2014, 85 new buses will enter into service
on HSL’s bus routes. The vehicles will be Euro 6 compliant,
low-emission vehicles with substantially lower local emissions than
the current buses. Air conditioning, ignition interlocks, automatic
fire extinguishing system and driving style monitoring system
improve travel comfort and safety. Five of the buses are hybrids.
Hybrid technology reduces both emissions and fuel consumption.
HSL tendered the operation of 41 Helsinki internal bus routes.
The operators of most of the routes will change and there will be
also other changes to the bus routes on 1 January 2014. HSL will
discontinue the Jouko neighborhood routes. These routes will be
operated by minibuses also in the future but they will be
renumbered with three-digit numbers and the J prefix will be
dropped.
Nine bus operators submitted tenders for the routes. The
operating costs of the services tendered in this round will
decrease by 4 percent on average, or EUR 0.96 million a year. The
services tendered account for about 7.3 percent of all bus services
procured by HSL. At the moment, there are in total 1,238 buses
operating on HSL’s bus routes.
