HSL to study the impacts of the Ring Rail Line and West Metro on people’s travel behavior in the Helsinki region

HSL will be launching a Travel Survey on Monday 4 April to study what kind of public transport journeys are made within the catchment areas of the Ring Rail Line and the West Metro. Survey invitations are distributed on buses, trains and the Metro.

The survey is an online questionnaire that passengers can complete after the journey or during it, for example, on a smart phone. In the survey, respondents are asked to provide information about the journey during which they received the survey invitation, such as what was the place of departure, where they are going and what modes of transport did they use for the journey.

Respondents are also asked, how the Ring Rail Line has affected the smoothness of their journeys and their choice of modes of transport and how they think the West Metro will affect the smoothness of their journeys and their choice of modes of transport. The impacts of the Ring Rail Line are surveyed on Vantaa bus routes and all commuter trains. The impacts of the West Metro are surveyed on South Espoo bus routes, commuter trains on the coastal line and on the Metro. The aim is to obtain information about the journeys of passengers over 15 years age and about the background factors affecting them.

Journeys to/from the airport are studied as part of the impact assessment of the Ring Rail Line. At the airport, passengers are interviewed at check-in halls and baggage claim halls.

The interviews at the airport are conducted in April. Elsewhere, the survey will run until Friday 27 May.

The 2014 Travel Survey studied journeys made in the Ring Rail Line catchment area before the opening of the Ring Rail Line. The 2016 Travel Survey is conducted now that the Ring Rail Line is open but the West Metro is not yet open. A new Travel Survey will be conducted once the West Metro has been operating for some time.
