HSL's passenger counts start on Monday 5 September

HSL’s Operational research group starts passenger counts on Monday 5 September. Passenger counts are carried out on weekdays 7am—7pm from September to November every year.

HSL’s research assistants observe passenger numbers on buses and tram from a car. HSL receives the figures in real-time via its digital Tieto Web system.  

The counts are carried out in 20 locations around Helsinki.

The figures are used to determine the share of public transport relative to car use. The modal share of public transport is one of public transport the public transport key figures published annually.

Helsinki City Planning Department publishes the results annually as part of the its report on traffic in Helsinki.
