The Helsinki city bike scheme was launched in 2016 and the service will now expand to Espoo on an experimental basis.
The ten city bike stations to be set up in Espoo will be borrowed from Helsinki, were the city bike network is expanding. The bike docks will be returned to Helsinki for the 2018 season. The city bike registration and season pass will cover also Espoo, i.e. customers will be able to use the bikes in Helsinki as well as Espoo.
“We received an exceptional amount of positive feedback about the city bike scheme in Helsinki and the numbers of users exceeded all expectations. Now HKL wants to offer the city of Espoo an easy way to test a similar service to facilitate residents’ everyday travel at the same time as the service is expanding in Helsinki,” says HKL's Managing Director Ville Lehmuskoski.
“We considered various options and eventually decided that the best option would be first to expand the HKL city bike network to Espoo to see how are the bikes received there. We selected Matinkylä-Olari as the pilot area because of the versatile land use in the area. This also enables us to have one bike station by the seaside, close to the Waterfront Walkway, which is important for our residents,” clarifies the Head of Traffic Management and ITS at City of Espoo Johanna Nyberg.
“I hope the city bikes will encourage people to use public transport. Not everybody wants to buy a bike but the city bike scheme might encourage people who don’t usually cycle to hop on a bike and have a go,” says Public Works Director Harri Tanska.
HKL is responsible for the development of the city bike system and participates in the provision of city bike services in Helsinki and Espoo. City bike stations are located at transport hubs in high density areas, where they speed up travel in the surrounding area and improve the accessibility of public transport, improving transport supply and promoting sustainable mobility.
“In the capital region and the wider HSL operating area, people’s everyday journeys do not end at municipal boundaries. Consequently, it is important that mobility services are developed from a regional perspective and that they are consistent,” says HSL’s Senior Loyalty Scheme Designer Tarja Jääskeläinen.
