Changes to public transport on 4 March 2019

4 March 2019 will see a number of changes to public transport. In Tapiola, the new bus terminal integrated with the metro station will open to traffic. The redevelopment of Hämeentie will start, leaving Sörnäinen without tram service and bus routes will be diverted in the Maunula area due to street works. In addition, there will be improvements to transport links between Kirkkonummi and Matinkylä.

New Tapiola bus terminal will improve public transport service in South Espoo

The opening of the Tapiola bus terminal will significantly improve public transport links in South Espoo. The new terminal makes interchange between the metro and buses as well as between bus services a lot easier.

For example, passengers will be able to change between Tapiola feeder services and the frequently running routes 550 and 551 comfortably indoors. This improves transport links from South Espoo to Meilahti and Leppävaara, for example.

Tram routes to be diverted for Hämeentie redevelopment works

The redevelopment of Hämeentie will cause major changes to tram services: there will be no tram service in Sörnäinen and trams 1, 6, 6T, 7 and 8 will be diverted to run via Kallio and Sturenkatu. The trams are set to return to Sörnäinen in early 2020. The redevelopment of Hämeentie is scheduled to be fully completed towards the end of 2020.

Buses will continue to run along Hämeentie and Mäkelänkatu throughout the works but there will be changes to stop locations as the works progress. The metro will run as usual, but there will be changes to the entrances to Sörnäinen Metro Station. In addition, the ticket hall roof at Sörnäinen Metro Station will be replaced.

The works will continue until summer 2020, after which the construction of a new light rail link will commence on Pirjontie, if the city councils of Helsinki and Espoo approve the new budget for the Jokeri Light Rail project.
