New zones are coming on 27 April - disruptions to ticket sales

HSL public transport tickets and travel zones will change on 27 April when the old fare zones based on municipal boundaries are replaced by new zones, A, B, C and D. On the day the new zones are introduced, there will be disruptions to ticket sales due to system updates.

The transition to the new zone system entails major changes to the backend systems. The systems will be updated on Saturday 27 April and there will disruptions to ticket sales. On 27 April, 3,100 card readers, over 500 ticket machines, some 1,700 onboard devices and the sales systems of 300 sales points and 19 service points will be updated. The HSL app used by over a million passengers will also be updated into the new zone system.

Ticket sales on Saturday 27 April

On Saturday 27 April, you can buy tickets using the HSL app or with your HSL card or from bus drivers and some ticket machines

The HSL app will work as usual, i.e. you can use the app to buy single, day and season tickets for the new zones. You can also use a season ticket or value loaded on your HSL card as usual. You can buy single tickets from HSL single ticket machines, from parking ticket machines in Helsinki and from bus drivers.

   

Disruptions to ticket sales on Saturday 27 April

HSL cards cannot be topped up with season tickets or value. Sales and service points as well as some ticket machines will not sell tickets due to sales system updates.

 

Get a ticket for your public transport journeys on Saturday in advance

  • Top up your HSL card with a season ticket or value in advance. Valid season tickets purchased before 27 April, will be automatically converted into zone tickets.
  • You can also buy single and day tickets in advance from sales and service points. Advance purchase tickets are loaded on disposable cards and they are valid from the time they are first shown at a card reader.
  • The HSL app is available for Android and iPhone devices for free from app stores.

Replace your green Travel Card with a new blue HSL card or switch to the HSL app before Saturday. The green cards cannot be used for travel under the new zone system. You can replace your card free of charge until 26 April, after which a processing fee of 6 euros is charged for the replacement and you can only replace your card at a service point.

On Sunday 28 April, ticket sales will be available as usual and HSL cards can be topped up at kiosks and other sales points as well as at ticket machines. Single and day tickets will be available from kiosks, stores and ticket machines as usual.

This is how valid tickets will be converted at 4.30am on 27 April:

  • Helsinki internal -> AB
  • Espoo and Vantaa internal tickets -> BC
  • Regional ticket -> ABC
  • Kerava–Sipoo–Tuusula -> D
  • Kirkkonummi–Siuntio -> D
  • Extended region 2 -> BCD
  • Extended region 3 -> ABCD
