Where can I buy tickets?

Buying tickets via the HSL app

The HSL app is the easiest way to buy tickets. You can buy single, day or season tickets wherever and whenever you like. The app also includes our Journey Planner which helps you to choose the right ticket and plan your route. When using the app, you can select from a number of payment methods including a debit/credit card, MobilePay or a commuter benefit (HSL Commuter Benefit, Edenred, Epassi and Smartum).

Buying tickets on the HSL card

If you do not have a smartphone or you cannot buy tickets using the app for some other reason, you can also pay your fare with the HSL card. The card costs EUR 5 and you can buy one from certain service points.

You can top up the HSL card with season or day tickets or with money that you can use to pay single fares. You can top up the card at sales points and some ticket machines. Please note that sales points may charge a service fee for topping up the card.

Buying tickets at card readers using contactless payment

Contactless payment is a fast and secure way to purchase tickets. Simply select the zones and show your debit/credit card to the reader. The ticket will be stored on your card, and you can board.

You can use contactless payment for adult single fares. Your card serves as your ticket, which you show to a ticket inspector. The ticket is valid on all HSL transport services: trams, the Metro, commuter trains, buses, and the Suomenlinna ferry.

Tips for buying tickets

The HSL area is divided into four zones, identified by letters A, B, C and D, spreading out from the center of Helsinki. Check the Journey Planner to see which zones your journey passes through, which ticket you will need and how much will it cost. Read more about the HSL area and zones.
Buy your ticket in advance as tickets are not sold on board. When you buy a ticket using the HSL app, the ticket must be on your phone before you board a vehicle or enter the Metro platform area or the Suomenlinna ferry pier.
The validity times of single tickets vary. You can change from one service to another during the ticket validity. AB, BC and D tickets are valid for 80 minutes, ABC and CD tickets for 90 minutes, BCD tickets for 100 minutes and ABCD tickets for 110 minutes. Paper single tickets purchased from ticket machines are valid for 10 minutes longer than other single tickets.

Questions about the purchase of tickets

How do I buy a ticket for a friend travelling with me?

The easiest way to buy tickets for several people is to use the HSL app. You can also buy a ticket for a friend with your HSL card, but if you already have a single ticket on your card, the validity of the second ticket will be the same as that of the previously purchased ticket. In other words, the tickets will expire at the same time. We recommend that you use the app. Please note that when you buy a ticket to another person, you must travel together.

How do I buy a ticket on behalf of another person?

If you are buying a ticket on behalf of another person, e.g. for your child, you can use the HSL app on their smartphone. Please note that when buying a season ticket, the buyer must authenticate strongly on the app. The child needs online banking credentials for this. This is because season tickets are personal and the entitlement to the reduced price must be verified. You can also buy a ticket for your child by buy topping up their HSL card online or at a sales point.
