HSL app

You can buy season, single, day and zone extension tickets. When you buy your ticket using the app, your phone is your ticket. Select the Tickets tab and follow the instructions.

You can pay your tickets by a debit or credit card that you have linked to the app. You can pay by VISA, VISA Electron, Mastercard and Amex. You can choose either debit or credit. In addition, you can pay with MobilePay, HSL Commuter Benefit, Edenred, Epassi and Smartum.

Ticket purchases up to 50 euros can also be charged to your phone bill. A payment method fee of 1.6 percent is added to these payments.

The ticket must be on your phone before you board a bus, train or tram, or before you take an escalator down to the metro platform area or enter the Suomenlinna ferry pier. Your phone must have enough battery power for the duration of the journey. If you order your ticket when already onboard a vehicle, on an escalator to the metro platform area, or on the platform area or the ferry pier, or if the the ticket inspector cannot check your ticket on the phone, you may be issued a penalty fare.

When boarding a bus, show the HSL app ticket display to the driver. On commuter trains, the metro, trams and on the orange trunk route buses you only need to show your ticket if a ticket inspector or conductor asks you to do so.

Season tickets available on the app:

• Season tickets for 14, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270 and 360 days for adults and children aged 7 to 17.
• Auto-renewing season tickets for adults and children aged 7 to 17. Children must have their own banking credentials for strong authentication.
• Auto-renewing saver subscriptions for adults. Read more about auto-renewing subscriptions
• 30-day season tickets for students. The discount is 40 per cent on adult rates. Read more about hte student discount

Season tickets are valid immediately. Alternatively, you can buy a season ticket in advance and set the validity to start within up to 60 days.

When buying a season ticket on the app for the first time, you must strongly authenticate using your online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. Authentication allows us to verify your home municipality from the suomi.fi system so that you get a correctly priced ticket.

If your address or student status changes, you must re-authenticate. You can re-authenticate using your online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. Go to Add > Settings > My information and select Re-authenticate.

You can set the ticket validity to start immediately or within 24 hours from the moment of purchase. You select the time when you purchase a ticket.

When you travel with your friends, spouse or children, you can buy single or day tickets for them on your phone.

Single and day tickets cannot be transferred from one phone to another. If you delete the HSL app from your phone or log out from the app, you will lose all valid single and day tickets you may have on your phone.

How to buy a zone extension ticket:

• Go to Single ticket.
• First select your Customer group. The customer group must be the same as on your season ticket.
• Select Travel zone, after which you will see all the available zone extension tickets.

You can transfer a season ticket to another phone:

• Log into the app with your HSL account at the bottom of More > Settings
• Go to Tickets and select Season ticket.
• The app will retrieve your valid season ticket from the back-end system.

The above instructions also apply when you reinstall the app on your phone.

You can only use a season ticket on one device at a time. Single and day tickets cannot be transferred to another phone.

If you encounter any problems, you should strongly authenticate; often authentication solves the problem. You can re-authenticate using your online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. Go to Add > Settings > My information and select Re-authenticate.

• Check your app store for the latest version of the HSL app and if need be, update your app.
• We recommend that you use the HSL app with a smartphone with  Android 8.0 or iOS 12.0 (or newer).

The ticket is not visible

• If the ticket you have purchased is not displayed in the view Your tickets, try closing and then opening the app.
• If this does not work, log out of the HSL app and then log in again using your HSL account. In order to log out, select More and then Settings.
• NB! When you log out of the HSL app, all valid single and day tickets will disappear from your phone. All season tickets, however, will remain on you phone.
• If the ticket could not be delivered to your phone, the card pre-authorization will be automatically cancelled, normally within two banking days.

Payment by phone bill

• If you encounter problems with charging purchases to your phone bill, make sure that the WiFi connection on your phone is off and that your phone does not have any VPN or other surfing protection apps currently active. These will prevent you from charging your purchases to your phone bill. F-Secure Freedome is an example of a typical VPN app. Using the app prevents the operator from being identified when charging mobile purchases to your phone bill.
• Contact your operator to ensure that your phone subscription doesn’t have a restriction on services with additional charges.

Payment by card

• If you are unable to pay for a ticket with a new debit or credit card, make sure that you have activated the card using a PIN code at a store or an ATM.
• In addition, check that there are no online payment restrictions on your card.
• If necessary, you can also try using some other payment method, such as Pivo or Mobile Pay.
• Logging out of and then back in to the app might also help. In order to log out, select More and then Settings.
• If you are unable to purchase a ticket on the HSL app, you need to use some other sales channel to purchase your ticket.
