For example, an adult AB single ticket will cost EUR 3.20, and an ABCD single ticket EUR 4.80. An adult 30-day AB season ticket will cost EUR 72.10 as a one-off purchase, and an ABCD season ticket EUR 118.80. Season tickets will continue to be available via the HSL app as an auto-renewing saver subscription at a slightly reduced price as before.
Ticket prices need to be increased in order to maintain the public transport level of service. There are four main reasons for this: an increase in the value-added tax on public transport from 10 percent to 14 percent planned by the State, increased operating costs, increased infrastructure costs, and significantly decreased travel by people working in expert positions, which is reflected in reduced commuting. The pricing also takes into account how much funding municipalities provide to public transport in the form of municipal contributions, i.e. how much of the costs of transport services they cover.
“All these changes mean higher prices for public transport users. To cover the increased costs, funding is needed from both service users and the municipalities. The increase in the value-added tax on public transport alone creates pressure to increase ticket prices by about six percent. The trend of more people working remotely and commuting less means that we have challenges in generating enough ticket revenue to cover the cost of public transport," says Mari Flink, Director of the Market Division.
Zone extension tickets and 60–270-day season tickets purchased as one-off will be discontinued during 2025
Zone-extension tickets will be discontinued due to low demand and because as a rule, customers buy season tickets for the zones they need. At the same time, we will make it possible for customers to combine season, day and single tickets for the same journey, i.e. customers will be able to easily make journeys across zone boundaries by adding a single ticket to their season ticket (e.g. an AB season ticket + a CD single ticket).
In addition, 60–270 season tickets available as one-off purchase will be discontinued. The demand for these tickets has been rather low. The majority of season tickets purchased are 30-day tickets. The 14-day, 30-day and 360-day season tickets that are popular with customers will remain in the product range. In addition, auto-renewing subscriptions and auto-renewing saver subscriptions will continue to be available via the HSL app.
With these changes, we aim to simplify the range of tickets offered.
Contactless payment and zone E to be introduced next year
In the future, contactless payments can be used to buy adult single tickets. This will provide a new payment method that is particularly suitable for occasional passengers or visitors. At 2025 prices, an adult AB single ticket purchased using contactless payment will cost EUR 3.40, and an ABCD ticket EUR 5.10, which is 20–40 cents or about seven percent more than tickets purchased using other payment methods. By implementing contactless payment, we aim to attract new customers and hope that our regular customers will continue to use the HSL app or HSL card, allowing us to offer them ticket products designed for regular customers as well as customized information about travel and our services.
There will also be a minor change to the zone model next year with the introduction of a new zone E in the northern parts of the HSL area and in Järvenpää. As a result, passengers will need to buy tickets for at least two zones also in zone D. Therefore, the prices of tickets for zone D will rise to the same level as the prices of two-zone tickets (AB, BC, CD) at the start of 2025.
We will tell about other changes planned for 2025 and their schedules later.
