Pilot of contactless payment expanded to HSL’s commuter trains

We are expanding our contactless payment pilot to commuter trains on 7 March. You can now buy tickets using contactless payment on all HSL’s rail services, i.e., commuter trains, trams, and the Metro, as well as on the Suomenlinna ferry. Contactless payment will be introduced on buses in the coming weeks.

We have introduced contactless payment in phases, one mode of transport at a time, to thoroughly test its functionality. The pilot started on the Suomenlinna ferry at the end of January. It was extended to Metro stations on 7 February and to trams on 21 February. So far, everything has gone well, and now the pilot is extended to HSL’s commuter trains. We will inform passengers about the rollout of contactless payment to buses as soon as the schedules are confirmed.

How to buy tickets using contactless paymenta

You can use contactless payment to buy adult single tickets..

  1. First, select the zones.
  2. Then show your debit or credit card to the card reader.

You can buy tickets using Visa or Mastercard, as well as Google Pay and Apple Pay. The card reader does not print a ticket. Your debit/credit card or payment app on your phone serves as your ticket, which you present to ticket inspectors when asked. The inspector can only see information related to the HSL ticket on the card, not any other card details or your personal information.

During the pilot phase, tickets purchased using contactless payment are not valid for travel on the blue buses because contactless payment is not yet enabled on the card readers on the buses. During the pilot, tickets purchased using contactless payment are valid for travel on trams, the Metro, commuter trains, and orange trunk route buses. Once the contactless payment software has been updated on all card readers, tickets purchased using contactless payment will be valid on all modes of transport.

We are overhauling the payment of tickets and upgrading our back-end systems

Contactless payment and new card readers are part of a comprehensive ticketing overhaul to make ticket payment and use easier. Digital transactions and purchases will be made easier, and more extensive self-service options will be available. Furthermore, the enhanced digital sales system will offer greater flexibility, enabling us to develop new services more agilely to meet future needs. More information: hsl.fi/en/ticketing-overhaul
