Nurmijärvi decided to apply for HSL membership

On Wednesday, 27 May, the Nurmijärvi City Council decided to apply for a membership in the Helsinki Regional Transport Authority. HSL-organised public transport would commence in Nurmijärvi by 1 January 2029 at the latest.

The decision would make Nurmijärvi the tenth HSL member municipality, with the entire municipality located in zone D. Passengers would also be able to use HSL’s tickets when traveling on public transport in Nurmijärvi. Public transport in Nurmijärvi is based on bus services, and an HSL membership would mean that all services in the municipality would be planned by HSL.

– It’s great that Nurmijärvi recognises the concrete benefits and opportunities of becoming an HSL member municipality. The decision ties Nurmijärvi even more closely into a well-functioning and integrated public transport system that serves residents smoothly in their daily lives", says Vesa Silfver, Acting Executive Director at HSL.

The Nurmijärvi City Council chose a route network option that emphasises direct connections to Helsinki city center as a basis for more detailed planning. Next, detailed planning of the new bus route network in Nurmijärvi will begin, followed by the tendering and procurement of bus services.

Nurmijärvi has more than 45,000 residents and is home to three urban areas: Klaukkala, Kirkonkylä and Rajamäki. With a population of over 20,000 residents, Klaukkala is the largest. Public transport in Nurmijärvi is based on bus services, some of which are intended to provide feeder services to trains at Kivistö station.
