HSL studies truck traffic during the autumn

HSL is conducting roadside inverviews to study truck traffic origin and destination points in the Helsinki region.

Truck drivers are interviewed during the autumn in five logistics areas. The first interviews are conducted in the surroundings of the Airport on 3 – 17 September.

In addition to the interviews, HSL collects data on truck traffic volumes and directions with a questionnaire sent to companies as well as through traffic counts in some 20 areas. The results will be available in spring 2014.

The roadside interviews will mostly not cause traffic to back up as trucks are stopped one at a time and the interviews are conducted in an area separate from other traffic, or the drivers are simply invited to answer the questionnaire online. The interviews take about 3-4 minutes, the invitation to participate in the survey online only a minute. The interviews and questionnaire to companies are carried out by Carement Oy, traffic counts by Nevia Oy.

The information obtained from the interviews and questionnaires is confidential.

Background information for transport system planning

A pilot study was conducted last autumn in Tuupakka, Vantaa to assess the appropriateness of the research method. Now HSL is studying freight traffic journeys more extensively. The key goal is to obtain data on freight traffic volumes and directions. The data is necessary in order to take the transportation needs of business and industry into account in Helsinki region transport system planning. Transport system planning sets out long-term transport planning policies.
