Only HSL tickets sold on commuter trains in the HSL area as of 1 January 2014

As of 1 January 2014, only HSL tickets will be accepted on commuter train journeys within the HSL area. VR zone tickets will continue to be valid on commuter train journeys beyond the HSL area. In practice the change means that in the HSL area, passengers can only purchase HSL tickets for journeys within the area. HSL tickets allow you to transfer to other modes of public transport in the HSL area.

Value and single tickets loaded on the HSL Travel Card are the most economic option. HSL runs a Travel Card campaign in Kerava, Kirkkonummi and Sipoo in December. During the campaign, new Travel Card customers can order a Travel Card free of charge via HSL's web site. The campaign starts on 9 December.

VR zone tickets will be valid also in the future on journeys beginning or ending outside the HSL area. For example, passengers traveling from Riihimäki to Espoo or from Rekola to Järvenpää can use VR zone tickets and change trains in Pasila or Kerava. Also, passengers who live outside the HSL area and get on a train at Kerava or Kirkkonummi stations, can use VR season passes for commuting also next year.

Passengers traveling on VR’s long-distance train tickets can also transfer to a commuter train in the HSL area and travel to their destination on the VR ticket.

In terms of ticket prices, the change affects the fares of pensioners living in Kerava and Kirkkonummi in particular. HSL does not have similar discounts for pensioners as VR. HSL's discount applies only to pensioners receiving national pension or guarantee pension from Kela. VR has not yet (5 Dec 2013) announced its fares for 2014.
