The West Metro will cause changes to the bus routes in South Espoo and Lauttasaari. The Metro will also affect services in areas around the coastal rail line in Espoo and Kauniainen as well as bus services Lehtisaari and Kuusisaari in Helsinki. There will be changes also to the bus routes in Veräjälaakso, Länsi-Pakila and Maunula.
The West Metro will provide a trunk connection from South Espoo via Lauttasaari to the center of Helsinki and East of Helsinki. When the Metro services begin, bus routes operating to Kamppi along Länsiväylä are withdrawn because the services would overlap with the Metro. Bus services in South Espoo and Lauttasaari will be mainly feeder services and, for example, journeys to the downtown Helsinki will in the future be made by bus and metro. An increasing number of city internal journeys will also be made by rail. The key feeder terminals will be constructed in Tapiola and Matinkylä.
The aim of the feeder bus route network plan has been simplify the route network and make if more efficient. This includes decreasing the number of routes and route versions. The aim is to provide public transport services to stops and streets with reasonable walking distances.
