Trams will return to operating via Helsinginkatu and Sörnäinen Metro Station from 4 May 2020

The redevelopmend of Hämeentie has progressed well and trams 1 and 8 will start running via Helsinginkatu and the Sörnäinen Metro Station from 4 May. Trams 6T and 7 will also return to operating via Kurvi but they will run between Hakaniemi and Sörnäinen via Helsinginkatu and Karhupuisto. The exact location of bus stops around the Sörnäinen Metro Station and their opening date will be confirmed in the spring.

The stop for trams 1 and 8 in the direction of Töölö will be on the Helsinginkatu side of the junction of Hämeentie and Helsinginkatu. The stop will also be served by trams 6T and 7 until Hämeentie is opened to trams heading to Hakaniemi. The tram stop for northbound trams will reopen in its original location on Hämeentie.

With the re-opening of tram tracks in Sörnäinen, the tram stops on Mäkelänkätu and Hämeentie will also reopen. In addition, the diversion via Sturenkatu and Läntinen Brahenkatu will be removed, causing changes to Urheilutalo tram stops. There will also be changes to stops for bus 51 on Läntinen Brahenkatu and Sturenkatu.

Changes to tram 1

Tram 1 will run between Urheilutalo and Hattulantie via Sörnäinen Metro Station and Helsinginkatu. The tram will serve the following stops: “Urheilutalo”, “Helsinginkatu”, “Sörnäinen (M)”, “Lautatarhankatu” and “Vallilan kirjasto” (Vallila Library). The following stops will no longer be served: “Urheilutalo” (on Läntinen Brahenkatu) and “Roineentie”.

Changes to trams 6 and 6T

Trams 6 and 6T will run between Hakaniemi and St. Paul’s Church via Kallio and Sörnäinen. The tram will serve the following stops: “Hakaniemi” (bays 1 and 2), “Kallion virastotalo”, “Karhupuisto”, “Kaarlenkatu”, “Helsinginkatu”, “Sörnäinen (M)”, “Lautatarhankatu”, “Hauhon puisto” and “Vallilan varikko”. The following stops will no longer be served: “Urheilutalo” and “Roineentie”. Tram 6 will be operated as tram 6T via Kamppi from 2 March to 20 July due to track work in Hietalahdenranta.

Changes to tram 7

Tram 7 will run between Hakaniemi and Hattulantie via Kallio and Sörnäinen. The tram will serve the following stops: “Hakaniemi” (bays 1 and 2), “Kallion virastotalo”, “Karhupuisto”, “Kaarlenkatu”, “Helsinginkatu”, “Sörnäinen (M)”, “Lautatarhankatu” and “Vallilan kirjasto” (Vallila Library). The following stops will no longer be served: “Urheilutalo” and “Roineentie”.

Tram 8 will run between Urheilutalo and St. Paul’s Church via Helsinginkatu. The tram will serve the following stops: “Urheilutalo”, “Helsinginkatu”, “Sörnäinen”, “Lautatarhankatu”, “Hauhon puisto”, “Vallilan varikko”

Redevelopment of Hämeentie

The section of Hämeentie between Siltasaarenkatu and Helsinginkatu is transformed into a pedestrian, cycling and public transport street. Access to properties and for emergency vehicles and deliveries is maintained but through traffic for private vehicles is not allowed. In addition, tram tracks, pipes and cables are replaced and the roof of the Sörnäinen Metro Station is renovated.

The works are scheduled to be completed in late 2020. The main contractor is Destia Oy.
