Pilot of contactless payment expanded to Metro stations

We are expanding our contactless payment pilot to the Metro stations on 7 February. You can use contactless payment to buy adult single tickets at all Metro Stations and card readers at the Market Square, Katajanokka and Suomenlinna ferry piers.

We thoroughly test the card readers and payment process before introducing contactless payment across all card readers. We started the pilot on the Suomenlinna ferry on 27 January and are now expanding it to the Metro stations. Next, we will introduce contactless payment on trams and, after that, on other modes of transport. After the pilot, contactless payment will become a permanent feature. We will inform passengers about the progress of the rollout as soon as the schedules are confirmed.

How to buy a ticket using contactless payment

You can use contactless payment for adult single fares. First, select the fare zones on the card reader’s display. More information about zones

Show your debit or credit card to the reader. You can buy tickets using Visa or Mastercard, as well as with Google Pay and Apple Pay. The card reader does not print a ticket. Your debit/credit card serves as your ticket, which you present to ticket inspectors when asked.

During the pilot phase, tickets purchased using contactless payment are not valid for travel on the blue buses because contactless payment is not yet enabled on the card readers on the buses. During the pilot, tickets purchased using contactless payment are valid for travel on trams, the Metro, commuter trains, and orange trunk route buses. Once the contactless payment software has been updated on all card readers, tickets purchased using contactless payment will be valid on all modes of transport.

We are overhauling the payment of tickets and upgrading our back-end systems

Contactless payment and new card readers are part of a comprehensive ticketing overhaul to make ticket payment and use easier. Digital transactions and purchases will be made easier, and more extensive self-service options will be available. Furthermore, the enhanced digital sales system will offer greater flexibility, enabling us to develop new services more agilely to meet future needs. More information: hsl.fi/en/ticketing-overhaul

You can give feedback about contactless payments during the pilot at hsl.fi/en/feedback. Select Tickets and payment, then New card reader, and you will be directed to a feedback form to give feedback on contactless payment.
