There will be changes to public transport services on Tuesday 5 December and on Independence Day 6 December. In addition, there will be diversions to bus and tram routes in downtown Helsinki due to Independence Day celebrations.
The eve of Independence Day, Tuesday 5 December
A Friday service will operate on 5 December, which means extended night services compared to a regular weeknight.
Additional pre-Christmas services will be running, i.e. the metro will run approximately two hours later than usual and some buses will have additional services. Read more about the additional transport services during the pre-Christmas party season in a separate release
Tram 5 to Katajanokka Terminal will run according to passenger ferry operating hours. Night tram route 9N will als run on Tuesday night. In addition, tram route 7 will be diverted on the same night.
In Kirkkonummi, the neighborhood route will operate a normal Tuesday service. There may be changes to U line services. Please check Matkahuolto's website for more detailed information on services on Independence Day.
Independence Day, Wednesday 6 December
On Independence Day, a Sunday service will operate. There will be diversions to bus and tram routes in downtown Helsinki due to Independence Day celebrations. More information on the diversions caused by the celebrations can be found below.
Trams 1T and 8T will run to the West Terminal and tram 5 will operate according to passenger ferry operating times. There may be changes to U line services.
Students’ torchlight procession will affect public transport services in downtown Helsinki about 4pm-5.30pm
Students in the capital region will organize their traditional Independence Day torchlight procession. Preparations for the procession will begin in Hietaniemi at 4.30pm. The procession will set off around 5pm and reach the Senate Square around 5.30pm. The event will end at approximately 6.15pm.
Changes to tram services
Kaikilla keskusta-alueella liikkuvilla raitiovaunulinjoilla on odotettavissa viivästyksiä kaduilla, joilla kulkueen reitti kulkee. Matkustamiseen kannattaa varata tavallista enemmän aikaa. There may be delays to all tram routes near the route of the procession.
Changes to bus services
lo 16.05, 16.35 ja 17.05 kulkevat molempiin suuntiin suoraan Mechelininkatua pitkin ilman Hietaniemen kierrosta. Bussit voivat viivästyä kulkueen ylittäessä Mechelininkatua.
The services of bus 24 from Kamppi at 4.12pm, 4.42pm and 5.12pm and from Seurasaari at 4.05pm, 4.35pm and 5.05pm will run in both directions straight along Mechelininkatu instead of Hietaniemi. There may be dealys to the buses when the procession crosses Mechelininkatu.
The following stops will not be served: “Taivallahti” (H1282), “Hietakannaksentie” (H1258 and H1259), “Hietaniemi” (H1269 and H1270) and “Väinämöisenkatu” (H1265 and H1266).
In addition, there will de delays to bus routes 20, 25, 30, 37, 41, 42, 63, 69 and 400 as well as to U lines from Kamppi.
The President’s Independence Day Reception will affect public transport services in downtown Helsinki from about 5.30pm to 10pm
During the President’s Independence Day Reception approximately between 5.30pm and 10pm, tram routes 2, 3, 4 and 7 will be diverted. Tram 5 will not operate, but bus 4X will run to Katajanokka. Buses will also replace tram services in Ullanlinna.
Trams 2 and 3 will have two different diversion routes. Tram 2 from Messukeskus will run to Hietalahti (stop H0811) and then continue towards Meilahti under route number 3.

Tram 3 will run from Meilahti to Eiranranta (stop H0826). From Eiranranta, the tram will continue towards Messukeskus. Replacement bus 3X will run between “Lasipalatsi” (H1903) and “Eteläranta” (H0433) along the following route: Mannerheimintie – Bulevardi – Fredrikinkatu – Laivurinkatu – Tehtaankatu – Laivasillankatu – Eteläranta.

Tram 4 will run from Kolmikulma instead of Katajanokka. Tram 5 to the Katajanokka Terminal will not run in the evening. Replacement bus 4X will run between “Postitalo” (H2038) and Katajanokka along the following route: Postikatu – Kaivokatu – Kaisaniemenkatu – Liisankatu – Pohjoisranta – Aleksanterinkatu – Mariankatu - Kanavakatu – Satamakatu – Kruunuvuorenkatu – Linnankatu – Merikasarminkatu.
Tram 7 will run straing along Kaisaniemenkatu. The following stops will not be served:
- Snellmaninkatu (H0454 and H0455)
- Kansallisarkisto (H0452 and H0453)
- Hallituskatu (H0450 and H0451)
- Senaatintori (H0405 and H0406)
- Aleksanterinkatu (H0403 and H0404)
- Mikonkatu (H0424 and H0425)
