Both escalators in the larger station hall have been replaced and will open for passenger use on Monday, 17 November.
The direction of the escalators will change: the down escalator will be at the eastern end of the Metro platform, and the up escalator in the middle of the platform.
The purpose of the change is to reduce congestion on the escalators.
Both lifts at the station were also renovated earlier this year and are in use as usual.
Finishing work will continue through the end of the year and into next spring
Lighting installation work will be carried out on the platform area during the remainder of the year. During the work, some parts of the platform will be fenced off, but the platform can otherwise be used as usual. Later in the winter, some of the signs on the platform will also be replaced.
Work will continue outside the station and at the bus departure bays until the end of the year. The paving surrounding the station will be replaced, and the lightning at the bus bays and in the area outside the station will be improved. During the paving work, the passageways at the bus departure bays will be narrower than usual. In addition, the bays will be made more visible during the winter.
At the same time, new signs and bus timetable displays will be installed in the station area, making it easier to find the bus bays and nearby areas. Most of the new signs will be placed outside the station. In addition, during the remainder of the year, new bicycle parking spaces will be built at the station, and, in the spring, potted plants will be placed in the outdoor areas.
Due to the work that is being carried out outside the station, bus 84 will continue to use departure bay 9, which is located on the Hiihtomäentie and Alepa side of the station hall. The bus will resume using its normal bay on Saturday, 22 November. Read more about the changes concerning bus 84 in our separate release.
Passenger feedback taken into account in the planning
Herttoniemi Metro Station has been in use since the Metro opened in 1982. It is an important hub for Metro and bus traffic, as well as for bicycle users.
The results of a passenger survey conducted in 2024 were taken into account in the planning of the renovation of the Metro station. Respondents requested, for instance, that the overall appearance, cleanliness, and general functionality of the station be improved. Additional seating requested by passengers will also be installed in the station hall.
Passengers also hoped that the placement of timetable displays at the station be improved, which has been taken into account in the renovation work. HSL will install more displays outdoors, for instance in the middle of the departure bays for buses towards Laajasalo and Roihuvuori.

The western side of the station hall on Friday, 14 November. Information posters, additional timetable displays, and seating will be installed in the hall during the winter.
Nearby forest areas served as inspiration for the station’s interior look
According to Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd, the nearby forests of Herttoniemi served as inspiration for the station’s interior look.
“We have used shades inspired by pine, bark, lichen, blueberry, and forest mushrooms for the color scheme of the interior surfaces. The new pendant lights in the ticket hall were grouped to resemble the branches of coniferous trees. The lights guide passengers from the entrance to the platform level,” says Kirsi Borg, project development manager at Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd.
