Malmi to become a trunk route node – renovation of the bus terminal starts

The role of Malmi as a key interchange in the HSL area will be strengthened in August when the refurbished Malmi bus terminal opens to traffic. The refurbishment works commence at the terminal on Tuesday 12 May. During the works, the buses that use the terminal will use temporary bus stops along Latokartanontie and Kirkonkyläntie.

The aim of the refurbishment is to develop public transport services in the vicinity of Malmi station. A new trunk bus route 560 will start running between Vuosaari and Myyrmäki on 10 August. The route will run via the Malmi station. The Malmi station will be an interchange for two trunk transport links: the main line trains and trunk route 560.

In addition, the opening of the Ring Rail Line on 1 July will significantly increase train services running  through the Malmi station: trains will be running from Malmi to the Central Railway Station in Helsinki and to Tikkurila in Vantaa at metro-like headways during daytime. Malmi will also be an interchange for passengers traveling from East Helsinki to the airport.

Under the refurbishment, the number and location of bus bays will change and the curved bus stops will be replaced by straight ones.

Construction works around the Malmi terminal will continue also after the opening of the terminal because the renovation of the Kirkonkyläntie bridge will continue well into the autumn. In addition, bus and bicycle lanes are constructed on Kirkonkyläntie and Latokartanontie.

Changes to bus stops in the vicinity of the Malmi terminal take effect at 2pm on 11 May. For more information, see here.
