Tips for purchasing a student ticket

Have you had problems with purchasing a student ticket? On this page, you can find a collection of tips and links to guide you in case you have been unable to purchase a ticket via the HSL app.

Once your enrollment information has been updated in the MyStudyinfo service, you can activate your student discount yourself in the HSL app. The enrollment information will be updated in the MyStudyinfo service by your educational institution. It is possible that your educational institution has not yet updated the information in the database. 

If you can’t see your entitlement to student discount, you can try the following:

  • Log in to the My Studyinfo service maintained by the Finnish National Agency for Education at https://opintopolku.fi/oma-opintopolku/. Check that you have authorized the disclosure of your information to HSL and that information on your enrollment has already been updated for the current year.
  • Select “My studies” at the top of the page.
  • Select your current study programme in the drop-down menu.
  • It is not enough that your status is active (“aktiivinen”); select “lisätiedot” (additional information) to see your enrollment status for the term (“Lukuvuosi-ilmoittautuminen”).
  • Remember also to check in the drop-down menu, under your name, that you have agreed to the disclosure of your information in the “Tietojeni käyttö” (How is my data used?) section.

If your information is up to date in the My Studyinfo service

  • Log out of the HSL app.
  • Restart your phone (this step is important as it will clear the cache).
  • Log in to the app again using your HSL account.
  • In some rare cases, you may have to delete and reinstall the app before restarting your phone.

NB! If you log out of the app or delete it from your phone, you will lose all valid single or day tickets you may have. It is therefore advisable that you do not log out of the HSL app before the validity of your ticket has expired and your journey has ended.

  • Select the 30-day ticket in the “Tickets” section. This will start a new strong authentication process.
  • If you already have strongly authenticated and the process does not begin automatically, you can start the strong authentication process again by selecting “More” > “Settings” > “My information” -> “Authenticate again". This is something you may have to do also in the future if your contact details or information on your studies change.
