Online top-up for HSL cards to open on 4 June; other changes to ticket purchase from the same date

The new HSL Ticket Store will open on 4 June. After this date, you will be able to top up your HSL card online. According to our current plan, we will begin transitioning to the new backend system on Monday, 2 June. Some ticket machines and multi-user HSL cards will be discontinued from this date. The schedule is contingent upon the successful completion of system tests. These changes will not affect HSL app users.

We are currently overhauling the payment methods and use of tickets, along with our backend systems. We have already introduced contactless payment, which can be used to buy adult single tickets at card readers on all modes of transport and at stations. We will soon open a new HSL Ticket Store, which will replace the previous HSL card online top-up service. Additionally, the multi-user HSL cards and some ticket machines will be discontinued.

The HSL app will work as usual; there will be no changes to the use of the app.

You can again top up your HSL card online starting 4 June

Our new backend systems enable the introduction of the new HSL Ticket Store. Our goal is to open the new store on 4 June.

Initially, you will be able to top up your HSL card with value and season tickets for all zones and customer groups. The tickets are valid on all HSL public transport. One of the key improvements is that tickets and value purchased via the new online store will no longer need to be transferred separately to the HSL card; they will appear on your card immediately after purchase. Compared to the previous online top-up service, the Ticket Store will be clearer and easier to use and will work on phones, tablets, and computer browsers.

When the Ticket Store first opens, you will only be able to use it to top up your personal HSL card. However, later on, it will also be possible to top up other people's cards; for example, parents will be able to top up their children's cards. According to our current plan, this feature is expected to be available in August. We will announce the exact date as soon as it is confirmed.

Some ticket machines to be removed from service on 2 June

Ticket machines have been introduced over the years for various needs. However, fewer people are buying tickets from these machines; currently, more than 70 percent of passengers purchase their tickets using the HSL app. In March, we introduced contactless payment, which can be used to buy adult single tickets for all HSL’s modes of transport. Soon, it will also be possible to top up the HSL card online. Following these changes, we will remove from service the tall, almost entirely blue large ticket machines designed for topping up HSL cards on 2 June.

In the future, you can purchase tickets using the HSL app for smartphones, online via the HSL Ticket Store, at card readers with contactless payment, and at sales and service points. Additionally, tickets can be purchased from the smaller HSL ticket machines that will remain in use for now and from some parking ticket machines in Helsinki.

More information about the removal of ticket machines and which ticket machines will remain in service is available on our website, hsl.fi/en/ticket-machines.

Multi-user HSL cards to be discontinued from 2 June

In our new backend system, there will no longer be separate multi-user and personal HSL cards. As part of the changes, we are simplifying our range of tickets, and in the future, all HSL cards will be personal, meaning they can only be used by the owner of the card.

If you currently have a multi-user card, the most convenient way to buy tickets in the future is the HSL app. You can also continue using the HSL card by obtaining a personal card.

More information about the withdrawal of multi-user cards is available on our website, hsl.fi/kumpikortti. On this page, you can also check whether you are currently using a multi-user or personal card.
