Buying tickets in the HSL using mobility budget

How to buy a ticket with mobility budget

Once you have activated your commuter benefit and proceed to buy a ticket, you will receive a notification confirming that you have been granted a commuter benefit. If you don’t receive this notification, check that you are using the most recent version of the app.

You can purchase single, day, multi-journey and season tickets as long as your benefit is valid. If the amount available to you does not cover the full ticket price, you can pay the remainder using your debit or credit card. You cannot use the mobility budget for an auto-renewing season ticket subscription.

Buy the desired ticket in the app as usual. Select HSL Commuter Benefit as the payment method. Once you have purchased the ticket, its price will be deducted from your mobility budget.

If you use your mobility budget to purchase single or day tickets, you don’t need to complete strong authentication. If you use your mobility budget to purchase multi-journey or season tickets, strong authentication is required, as we will verify your home municipality. You can complete strong authentication using your online banking credentials or a mobile certificate.

You can see your remaining budget in the app next to the payment method. You can also view your commuter benefit information under My information at hsl.fi.

If your employer issues you a mobility budget monthly, you will receive a new amount each month.

Commuter benefit is personal

The commuter benefit is a personal fringe benefit. You can only use it to buy tickets for yourself.

You can pay the remaining amount of the ticket price with your own debit or credit card

If your mobility budget does not cover the full cost of a ticket purchase, you can add your own debit or credit card as a second payment method.

When your HSL Commuter Benefit mobility budget is no longer sufficient to cover the ticket purchase, the app will notify you that there is not enough mobility budget available to pay for the ticket. The app will then offer you the option to pay the remaining amount using another payment method. You will then be taken to the payment method selection view, where you can add a new debit or credit card or select a card you have already saved.

Check the expiry date of your mobility budget in the app

The commuter benefit is a personal fringe benefit. It is tax-free for employees up to €3,400 per year. Your employer decides whether any mobility budget issued to you is reset at year-end or whether it remains available in the following calendar year.

You can check the expiry date of your mobility budget in the HSL app under payment methods and in the My information section at hsl.fi.
