East Vantaa Route Network Plan

Public transport in East Vantaa is being redesigned for the coming years. HSL is preparing a new route network plan for the area that examines bus connections, travel needs and the cost-effectiveness of services in the area. The key objectives of the plan are to better meet customers' needs, achieve savings in service costs and make use of existing customer insight on travel habits and demand.

The introduction of the Vantaa light rail in 2029 will require changes to the route network. The light rail will partly replace trunk bus route 570 and will also affect the routes of other bus services.

Blog 1: Planning of the East Vantaa route network has started

We have started preparing a route network plan for East Vantaa. Our aim is to better align service supply with demand and, through this, achieve savings in operating costs. When planning bus routes in East Vantaa, we will take into account Vantaa light rail line 20, which is scheduled to be completed in 2029. The new service will have a major impact on construction and public transport service supply in the area.

A key focus of the route network plan is to examine the viability of the current regional bus routes in particular, and to improve feeder connections and flexibility of travel.

The previous route network plan for East Vantaa (the Lahdenväylä Route Network Plan) was completed in 2017. The plan aimed to significantly increase passenger numbers. The Covid-19 pandemic reshaped travel habits, for example, increasing demand for leisure travel.

Schedule

  • June–August 2026: mapping background information for planning
  • September–December 2026: preparing a draft route network plan and engaging residents in the planning process
  • Early spring 2027: finalizing the route network plan and submitting it for approval

The goal is for the route network plan to be completed in spring 2027.

The changes will be introduced in two phases. The first changes will take effect no earlier than the beginning of 2028. The second phase of changes will take effect once the Vantaa light rail is completed, approximately in 2029.

Progress of planning and participation

We will share updates on the progress of planning here and through our other channels. We have now moved from reviewing baseline data to drafting the first version of the route network drawing on existing customer insight.

If necessary, we will gather additional information about travel needs in the area and involve residents in the planning through surveys.
