New tram map to be introduced in November

A new tram map will be introduced in Helsinki at the beginning of November. The map, which has been developed based on passenger feedback, will be displayed at tram stops and inside trams.

During the summer and autumn, a test version of the new tram map was displayed at tram stops at Helsinki Central Railway Station, Pasila station (Pasilansilta), and on Asemapäällikönkatu in Itä-Pasila. The map was also available at Helsinki Tourist Information.

We gathered feedback through an online survey. The maps on display included a prompt to respond to the survey. Over the summer, we collected feedback from tram passengers in the city center and at Pasila station. In the autumn, we tested the colors used to present different tram routes with HSL’s online customer development community. In total, we received over a thousand comments on the map.

Thanks to both survey responses and verbal feedback, we were able to make the map more informative, clearer, and more user-friendly.

What’s changing in the new map?

The updated tram map, like its predecessor, presents a simplified view of the tram routes. Routes have been straightened to help users quickly and easily understand the services, routes, and transfer stops. The distances between stops on the map do not reflect actual geographic distances. For more precise navigation or geographic details, we recommend using the HSL app or the Journey Planner.

Based on feedback, we have:

  • Added new landmarks, such as the Olympic Stadium and the HSL service point
  • Improved readability by adjusting the colors used for tram routes. The new color scheme provides better contrast and supports accessibility.
  • Streamlined the base map in certain areas to better reflect the actual urban layout.
  • Added information about ferry and cruise connections.

Many other individual changes have also been made based on development suggestions. The new route colors include previous colors and a few new additions. The map also takes into account future expansions, such as the extension of tram services to Laajasalo.

Thank you for your feedback

We received over a thousand verbal and written comments about the tram map. Overall, the map was considered clear and functional. We gathered a wide range of feedback on colors, layout, landmarks, text, and symbols.

The high volume of feedback shows strong interest in the tram map and confirms that it is a valued way to present tram routes. We thank everyone who shared their views and helped shape the new tram map.

New map available in November

The new tram map will be introduced at the beginning of November, when tram services in the city center resume their normal routes following the completion of construction work in Hakaniemi. Trams will resume operating across Pitkäsilta Bridge on 3 November. Some of the changes between the first version of the new tram map and the version launching in November are due to the completion of construction projects on Mannerheimintie and in Hakaniemi.

From November, the new tram map will be available at tram stops, inside trams, and as a PDF on HSL’s website.
