Laajasalo to join Helsinki’s tram network – tram routes 11 and 12 to start operating on Saturday 7 November

Tram routes 11 and 12 will start operating to Laajasalo at 10am on Saturday 7 November Be prepared for crowded trams and possible delays on the first day of service.

Helsinki’s tram network will expand when Kruunuvuorensilta Bridge opens to tram services on 7 November. The bridge opened to pedestrians and cyclists in the spring. In the future, Laajasalo will be served by two tram routes: 11 (Kruunuvuorenranta–Pasila) and 12 (Yliskylä–Railway Square).

The new tram routes will provide a new cross-town connection, connecting Laajasalo to Helsinki’s tram network. They will provide passengers with a faster connection to central Helsinki. They will also provide new journey options and opportunities to transfer between different modes of transport.

Tram 11 from Kruunuvuorenranta to Pasila

Tram 11 will connect Kruunuvuorenranta and Korkeasaari with the public transport hubs in Kalasatama and Pasila. The new tram route will provide a direct connection between Yliskylä and Pasila. The journey time will be about 20 minutes.

Between Sompasaari and Pasila, tram 11 will follow the same route as tram 13, also providing more frequent service between Pasila and Kalasatama. There is an accessible interchange with the Metro at Kalasatama and with train services at Pasila station. The Kalasatama stop is located on Leonkatu next to the Redi shopping center.

Tram 12 from Yliskylä to Railway Square

Tram 12 will provide a new direct connection between Helsinki Central Railway Station and Kruunuvuorenranta. The journey time will be about 20 minutes. For passengers changing from the Metro to a tram, we recommend changing at the University of Helsinki Metro Station and using the “Kaisaniemenkatu” tram stop, which provides an easy and accessible interchange. You can interchange from train to tram at Railway Square. Unlike the other tram stops, the stop for tram 12 (bay 15) is located on Mikonkatu.

Initially, tram 12 will run to Railway Square instead of Hakaniemi due to the disruption to Metro services starting in 2027. The terminus will move to Hakaniemi once the replacement of Junatie Metro bridge is completed.

Be prepared for crowded trams on the opening day

On the first day of service, be prepared for crowded trams and possible delays, particularly in the morning. There may be less space than usual on the trams, which is worth bearing in mind if you are traveling with a pram, for example.

Enjoy your ride on the world’s most beautiful tram route!
