Electric scooters as part of route suggestions – pilot in the Journey Planner

In autumn 2024, HSL has launched a pilot with the purpose of integrating  electric scooters maintained by various operators into the Journey Planner.

During the pilot, users can search for routes that include electric scooters as a mode of transport on top of public transport services in the Journey Planner. The electric scooters of those operators who have provided HSL with their rental and location information will be included in the route suggestions.

Activate electric scooters in the settings

In order to include electric scooters in your route suggestions, go to Settings above the route suggestions next to the departure time in the Journey Planner on hsl.fi. During the pilot, electric scooters can only be included in the route suggestions when using the Journey Planner with a web browser. In other words, it is not possible to incorporate them into the search when using the HSL app.

Once you have activated the electric scooters, the Journey Planner will display them among the other modes of transport in the route suggestions. The scooters are shown on a map and you can check their locations and availability in real time. The scooters are indicated by a gray scooter symbol.

You can easily combine electric scooters with your public transport journey and thus add flexibility to your travelling.

You are responsible for unlocking the scooters and using them in a safe manner

Please note that you need to use the app of the operator in question in order to unlock and pay for the use of the scooter. The availability of the scooters may also change, meaning that the scooter included in the route suggestion may not be available to make the journey in question.

We would also like to remind you that you need to obey traffic safety rules. Always put safety first! For instance, the City of Helsinki recommends that everyone wear a helmet when riding an electric scooter.

HSL is not responsible for the electric scooters, their functionality, or any damage caused by them. The Journey Planner only provides information on the availability and location of the scooters. In other words, you are responsible for using the scooters in a safe manner!

The Road Traffic Act equates scooters with bicycles. Therefore, park the scooter in the direction of travel and as near the side of the road as possible. According to the Road Traffic Act, an electric scooter can be parked or stopped on the pavement or cycle path. However, the scooter must not be parked in a way that blocks others from moving or impedes traffic. For instance, the parking areas for electric scooters in downtown Helsinki are marked with designated signs.
