“The project was completed ahead of schedule, allowing us to launch tram services to Laajasalo before the end of this year. This would not have been possible without the work of both the Kruunusillat project team and Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd,” says Johanna Wallin, Director of HSL's Transport Services.
The new tramway is exceptional even by international standards. It features three bridges, among them the 1.2-kilometer-long Kruunuvuorensilta Bridge, the longest bridge in Finland. The bridge offers views of maritime Helsinki, including the open sea, Suomenlinna, Herttoniemenranta and Kulosaari. It opened to pedestrians and cyclists in April, but no car traffic is allowed on the bridge apart from emergency vehicles.
The new tram connection will transform public transport in Laajasalo. Tram 12 will take passengers from Yliskylä in Laajasalo to the Railway Square in about 20 minutes. The new tramway will also improve crosstown connections: tram 11 will run between Kruunuvuorenranta and Pasila, and services between Pasila and Kalasatama will be more frequent than before.
The opening of the tramway will also affect bus routes in Laajasalo. Bus routes will change on 7 January 2027 to provide smooth interchanges not only at Herttoniemi Metro Station but also at stops along the tram route.
Before tram services begin, Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd will continue training tram drivers on the new route and carry out incident management drills on the tramway.
