Track work related to the Espoo Rail Line project of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency causes disruptions to train services on the Coastal Line in spring, summer, and autumn this year. There will be one and two-day disruptions to Coastal Line train services on weekends in August and September.
During the disruptions, there will be no train services from Leppävaara towards Kauklahti, Kirkkonummi and Siuntio. Westbound train services from Leppävaara will be replaced by buses. E, U, L and Y trains will not run. The disruptions will also affect long-distance train services on the Coastal Line. A trains will run between Helsinki and Leppävaara as usual. The timetables and routes of train replacement buses are available in the Journey Planner.
Service disruptions are scheduled for five weekends, beginning on Sunday, 31 August.
The service disruptions will take place as follows:
- Sunday, 31 August 3am–Monday, 1 September 4am
- Saturday, 6 September 3am–Monday, 8 September 4am
- Saturday, 13 September 3am–Monday, 15 September 4am
- Sunday, 21 September 3am–Monday, 22 September 4am
- Saturday, 27 September 3am–Monday, 29 September 4am
A trains will run between Helsinki and Leppävaara as usual during the service disruptions. Additionally, H trains will run between Kirkkonummi, Siuntio and Hanko.
The Espoo Rail Line project of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency entails the construction of two new tracks between Leppävaara and Kauklahti. The service disruptions are essential for the progress of the project, allowing work on the existing tracks to be carried out. This work will continue in the coming years. As a result, train services will eventually operate every 10 minutes from Helsinki to Kauklahti.
Train services will be replaced by buses

During the service disruptions, train services from Leppävaara towards Kauklahti, Kirkkonummi, and Siuntio will be replaced by buses. The replacement buses take passengers to train stations or nearby.
Replacement buses:
- 211E Leppävaara–Kauniainen–Espoo–Kauklahti
- 211U Leppävaara–Kauniainen–Espoo–Kauklahti–Kirkkonummi
- 213X Elielinaukio–Turunväylä–Espoo
- 249Y Leppävaara–Turunväylä–Espoo–Kehä III–Kirkkonummi(–Siuntio)
During the service disruptions, train services will be replaced by buses 211E, 211U, 213X and 249Y. Bus 211E will run between Leppävaara and Kauklahti, and bus 211U will run between Leppävaara and Kirkkonummi. The buses will stop at all intermediate stations or near the stations. Bus 249Y will run from Leppävaara along Turunväylä via Tuomarila, Espoo station, and Kirkkonummi to Siuntio. Only some 249Y services on weekdays will run all the way to Siuntio. Bus 213X will provide a fast connection along Turunväylä between Helsinki, Koivuhovi, Tuomarila, and Espoon keskus.
The replacement buses have an open fare collection system. VR tickets are also accepted on the buses. Bicycles are not allowed on replacement buses because there is no room for bikes to be carried safely.
The journey times of rail replacement buses can be significantly longer than those of trains. In most cases, journey times by bus will be 10–20 minutes longer than by train, but on long journeys, the increase in journey times may be more than 30 minutes.
The timetables for replacement bus services for the autumn are available in the Journey Planner.
Other alternative transport links
During the service disruptions on the Coastal Line, other public transport services will run as normal. For example, the Metro provides an alternative transport link from Espoo to Helsinki. There are several bus routes offering frequent feeder services to the Metro stations. During the five-week disruption in the summer, some bus routes will operate more frequently.
Other transport links during the service disruptions:
- Frequent bus services to Metro stations
- Buses 548 and 549 from Kauniainen to Tapiola

The project aims to improve the performance of train services
The Espoo Rail Line project entails the construction of two new tracks between Leppävaara and Kauklahti. Once completed, the rail link will improve the punctuality of commuter train services in Kirkkonummi and Espoo as well as the punctuality of long-distance train services in the direction of Turku. In addition, improvements will be made to the Kilo, Kera, Kaunainen, Koivuhovi, Tuomarila and Kauklahti train stations. The project started in spring 2021 and it is scheduled to be completed in 2029.
