Espoo
Suvisaaristo
- “Mellilänkuja”, stops E4519 and E4517
The change is made in response to passenger feedback. The new name is “Suvisaarentie 79”. Mellilänkuja is the street next to the previous stop, not adjacent to these stops. The stops are renamed after the building next to them.
Helsinki
City center
- Rautatieasema, pysäkit H0301 ja H0302, laiturit 41 ja 42.
The new name is “Päärautatieasema” (Central Railway Station). There are several bus and tram stops across the HSL area that are next to railway stations, and the old name did not clearly explain the location of the stops. The new name corresponds with the names of the adjacent railway and Metro station.
Herttoniemi, Herttoniemi Business Area and Herttoniemenranta
- “Työnjohtajankatu” stop H4696 and “Puusepänportti”, stop H5022
The new name is “Puusepänkatu”. Previously, the stops for buses traveling in different directions, located at the same point on the street, had distinct names. The new name has been taken from the adjacent street, which features landmarks like the Marimekko headquarters and other commonly visited services. - “Herttoniemenranta”, stops H4278 and H4714.
The new name is “Kipparvuori” after the crag next to the stops. Herttoniemenranta is a large area, and the stops are far from the so-called center of Herttoniemenranta, which is why the old name did not clearly indicate the location of the stops. Additionally, the name “Kipparvuori” resembles the names of the “Kipparlahti” stops and the nearby Kipparlahti Bay, which may help clarify the location of the stops better than the previous name.
Ilmala/Eteläinen Postipuisto
- “Ilmalan bussivarikko” (Ilmala Bus Depot), stops H2197 and H2198
The change is made in response to passenger feedback. The new name is “Sähkekatu”. The depot after which the stops were named has been decommissioned, and the building has been demolished. Sähkekatu is a street currently under construction near the stops. The name is being adopted now before the street is completed to avoid having to change the stop names again later.
Itäväylä between Kalasatama, Kulosaari, Herttoniemi, Itäkeskus, Vartioharju and Tankovainio
We are testing a new unified naming system for bus stops along Itäväylä. This trial includes the most frequently used stops along Itäväylä. The new system aims to facilitate travel by, for instance, making it easier to follow the route on the onboard displays during the journey.
The new naming system is specifically designed for stops located along major roads, which are often situated farther away from the focal point of the area or street that most users of the stops are trying to reach, and which has typically been used as the stop’s name. Furthermore, using only the name of the major road as a stop name has often not been possible because there are multiple consecutive stops along the same road. According to HSL's naming guidelines, stops with identical names should be within walking distance from each other.
Previously, for these reasons, easily recognizable names of areas, neighborhoods, or major roads have often been avoided as stop names. When such names have been used, they sometimes created confusion or were misleading.
The new naming system allows, for example, including the Tankovainio area directly in the name of the main stops of the area, even if the stops are located at the edge of the actual Tankovainio area along Itäväylä.
In the new naming system, the first part of the name connects the stop to the area name, cross street, or other nearby stops with the same name. The latter part of the name explains how the stop's location differs from the so-called center of the area or the locations of other nearby stops, and is, for example, the name of the main road on which the stop is located.
We will later conduct a passenger survey on the change.
