Nurmijärvi route network planning has started

HSL and the Municipality of Nurmijärvi have begun planning the public transport route network for Nurmijärvi. The plan will examine what kind of public transport connections would best serve Nurmijärvi as part of HSL public transport from the beginning of 2029.

The Nurmijärvi Municipal Council has decided to apply for HSL membership, which would begin no later than 1 January 2029. The current transport service contract will terminate at the end of 2028, so future public transport services need to be planned well in advance of the possible start of HSL services.

If Nurmijärvi joins HSL, traveling could become easier in several ways: you will be able to plan your journey using the HSL Journey Planner, buy your ticket using the HSL app, and find timetables, routes and information about any disruptions using HSL’s services.

Route network planning covers the whole of Nurmijärvi and connections to Helsinki and neighboring municipalities

As part of the route network planning, we will integrate public transport in Nurmijärvi into the wider regional public transport network. We will look at both journeys within the municipality and connections particularly to Helsinki, Vantaa, Hyvinkää and Tuusula. The planning covers the whole of Nurmijärvi, including Klaukkala, Kirkonkylä, Rajamäki, Röykkä and other urban and village areas.

When assessing the different options, we will consider, for example, how well the connections serve commuting and study, school and other everyday journeys in different parts of Nurmijärvi. We will also assess journey times, interchanges, service levels, costs and the practical operation of the services.

The future arrangements have not yet been decided. At this stage, no decisions have been made on individual routes, stops, service frequencies or operating hours. These will be determined as the planning progresses, once we have gathered the background information, heard from residents and assessed the different options.

Draft route network to be published for comments around the year end

In autumn 2026, we will gather background information, define the public transport service level and assess different route network options. The planning will draw on information about existing public transport connections and their use, as well as where people live and where schools, workplaces and services are located.

The draft route network is due to be published for comments at the end of 2026/early 2027. You will then be able to explore the proposal and its assessed impacts and provide feedback.

We will review the feedback as part of the overall assessment of the draft and make changes to the plan where necessary. The Municipality of Nurmijärvi will then be asked to issue a statement on the plan. We aim to submit the route network plan to the HSL Executive Board for approval in late spring 2027.

The schedule is preliminary and may be adjusted as the planning progresses.

Throughout the planning process, we will provide information about opportunities for residents to have their say, the draft route network and any changes made to it based on the assessment. Before the plan is considered by the HSL Executive Board, we will also present the version of the plan that will proceed to decision-making.
