Vantaa light rail before-and-after study 

The Vantaa light rail is a light rail line currently under construction. It will run from Aviapolis in Vantaa via Jumbo, Tikkurila and Hakunila to Mellunmäki in Helsinki. Services are scheduled to begin at the end of 2029.

The Vantaa light rail will largely follow the same route as trunk bus route 570, which operates between Mellunmäki and Helsinki Airport.

In February 2026, we studied travel patterns in the catchment area of trunk bus route 570 when construction of the light rail had only just begun. We examined where people travel from and to, which modes of transport they use, and how travel varies by day of the week and time of day.

We will use the results to assess the impacts of the Vantaa light rail, to prepare the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan, and to maintain and develop traffic forecast models.
