West Helsinki Route Network Plan

Once completed, new tram links will transform public transport in West Helsinki. Light rail line 14, running from Kannelmäki via Lassila, Haaga, Munkkiniemi and Meilahti to the city center, will serve as the main connection to the city center.

The West Helsinki bus network will be reorganized in phases once the tram services start operating in the early 2030s.

HSL's Executive Board will discuss the Route Network Plan on 26 May 2026.

Our goal is to provide public transport links that meet the travel needs of passengers in West Helsinki once the light rail line 14 starts operating. To manage operating costs, we will adjust the current bus network so that it will serve as extensive an area as possible without overlapping trunk bus and tram connections.

West Helsinki Route Network Plan ready to be submitted for approval

The West Helsinki Route Network Plan is now ready to be submitted for approval. HSL’s Executive Board will discuss the route network plan on 26 May 2026.

The route network now submitted for approval is largely the same as in the initial draft plan. However, some adjustments have been made based on customer insights and the survey we conducted on the draft, within the limits set by costs and other constraints.

According to current information, the tramway infrastructure will be completed in phases, allowing the changes to tram and bus routes to be introduced during 2029–2031.

How can you participate and follow the progress of planning?

The route network plan has now progressed to the decision-making stage, and the HSL Executive Board will decide on its approval in May 2026.

In developing the draft, we have drawn on our existing comprehensive customer insight as well as the results of additional resident surveys.

In November, we participated in resident workshops organized as part of the West Helsinki Light Rail project.
