Proposed route network for West Helsinki
The West Helsinki Route Network Plan is now ready to be submitted for approval. HSL’s Executive Board will decide on the route network plan on 26 May 2026.
The proposed route network submitted for approval is largely the same as in the initial draft plan, but some adjustments have been made based on the survey we conducted on the draft plan. You can read more about the route network below.
According to current information, the tramway infrastructure will be completed in phases, allowing changes to tram and bus routes to be introduced during 2029–2031.
Changes based on customer insight
We conducted a thorough review of existing customer insight, as well as the results and open responses from surveys and workshops conducted during the planning process. The customer insight provided a great deal of valuable information and useful perspectives for refining and improving the route network plan.
In the planning process, our goal is to find solutions that serve as many people as possible while remaining within the limits set by costs and other planning constraints. The final outcome always requires balancing different options and making choices between alternatives. Unfortunately, it is not possible to implement individual requests.
However, based on customer insights, and particularly, the results of the survey on the draft plan, we were able to make a few changes to the proposed route network within the existing constraints.

New routes
It will connect Meilahti, Töölö and South Helsinki, providing a direct connection to the major transport hubs in Kamppi and Meilahti. The route will be paired with tram 4, which operates between Kamppi and Meilahti.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
Tram 14 is a new trunk rail connection serving West Helsinki. It will run from Kirurgi in Ullanlinna along Mannerheimintie to the city center, Meilahti and Munkkiniemi, from where it will continue along Huopalahdentie and Vihdintie (new track sections) to southern Kannelmäki.
On the northernmost section, between Länsi‑Haagan aukio and Kannelmäki, the route will provide a direct connection to the western central city and its key transport hubs. Tram 14 will also provide a connection to Valimo and Pohjois-Haaga stations, which offer fast rail connections all the way to the city center.
South of Länsi-Haagan aukio, the route will provide a connection to the city center and the western central city. It will also provide a connection from southern Helsinki to the city center and replace the service currently provided by tram route 10 in Ullanlinna.

Basic weekday headways: 20 minutes
Bus 29 will run from Kamppi via Mechelininkatu, Linnankoskenkatu and Paciuksenkatu to Munkkivuori. In Munkkivuori, the bus will operate the Ulvilantie loop clockwise, terminating at Munkkivuori shopping center.
Bus 29 will provide connections from Munkkivuori to, for example, Töölö and the city center. A direct bus connection from the inner parts of Munkkivuori to Kamppi will be retained, as the street and stop network does not allow for a feeder bus service to the tram that would serve all the current stops of bus route 20.
Together with bus route 39, bus 29 will also provide comprehensive public transport service on Mechelininkatu. In addition, the route will serve Ulvilantie and Professorintie. On Ulvilantie, bus 29 will replace trunk bus 20, while on Professorintie, it will provide a connection to the city center, replacing trunk bus 500, which currently runs to Pasila and Itäkeskus.

Basic weekday headways: 20 minutes
Bus 39 will follow the route of the current trunk bus 30 between Meilahti and Myyrmäki. Bus 39 will run from Kamppi via Mechelininkatu, Linnankoskenkatu and Paciuksenkatu to Huopalahdentie. From Huopalahdentie, it will follow the route of the current trunk bus 30 to Myyrmäki station, with the exception that bus 39 will not run via Vanha viertotie. In addition, the bus will call at Pajamäki.
The route will provide a connection from Vaskipelto to Malminkartano and Myyrmäki. In addition, it will provide a direct connection from Konala and Pajamäki to the Helsinki city center. As tram 14 will operate in Töölö along Mannerheimintie, bus 39 will maintain a connection from the western parts of Töölö to Munkkivuori and Pitäjänmäki.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
Bus 41 will run from Kuninkaantammi via Kannelmäki and Haaga to Munkkivuori and Talinranta. It will replace the northern section of the current bus route 52 between Kuninkaantammi and Munkkivuori.
Bus 41 will provide a feeder connection from Kuninkaantammi, Hakuninmaa and Maununneva to I and P trains at Kannelmäki. At its northern end, the route will particularly serve school journeys. In Talinranta, the route will provide a feeder connection to tram routes 13 and 14. It will enable a welcome connection from Munkkivuori and Talinranta to Huopalahti station.
In the route network plan, route 52 is split into two routes, 41 and 52. Based on customer insight and the number of boardings, only a few passengers travel from Kaarela and Haaga all the way to Otaniemi. In addition, passenger numbers on the southern section of the route are significantly lower than on the northern section. By splitting the route into two, we can better allocate supply to the sections of the route with higher demand. Passengers traveling from Kaarela and Haaga to Otaniemi can still make the journey by changing from bus 41 to tram 15 at Huopalahti station or to bus 52 on Huopalahdentie.

Route changes
Basic weekday headways:10 minutes

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
Tram 2 will be rerouted in Töölö, Kamppi and South Helsinki. It will run from Merisotilaantori in Katajanokka via Aleksanterinkatu to Lasipalati, from where it will continue along Mannerheimintie to the Opera. North of the Opera, the route will remain unchanged.
With its extensive operating hours, tram 2 is the primary connection to Katajanokka and, together with tram 1, provides frequent service between Lasipalatsi and Katajanokka. Preliminary changes have been planned to the stop network in Katajanokka to ensure that the two routes together serve as wide an area as possible.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
The route of tram 3 will remain largely unchanged. Following the introduction of the new tram route 5, the Meilahti terminus for tram 3 will be moved from Kuusitie to Rosina Heikelin puisto, next to Meilahti Hospital. The service level will remain unchanged.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
Tram 4 will be rerouted. Its southern terminus will move to Olympia Terminal, from where the tram will follow the current route of tram 2 via Kaivokatu and Kamppi to Töölö. From Töölö, the tram will continue via Meilahti to its terminus in Munkkiniemi. Together with the new tram route 5, tram 4 will provide a frequent trunk route connection between Meilahti and Kamppi, while also retaining its role as a connection between Vanha Munkkiniemi and the city center. Operating hours will remain unchanged.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
The route of tram 7 will change on its northern section. The extension of tram route 13 to Munkkivuori will replace tram route 7 between Meilahti and Pasila, and tram 7 will terminate at Pasila.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
Tram 10 will be rerouted south of Ylioppilastalo. The tram will run via Bulevardi, Fredrikinkatu and Tehtaankatu to its terminus in Eira. The new route of tram 10 will replace the service currently provided by tram 1 in Eira and provide a new direct connection between southern and northern Helsinki along Mannerheimintie. Operating hours will remain unchanged.
Tram 14 will replace tram 10 in Ullanlinna.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
Tram 13 will be extended from Pasila via Meilahti and Munkkiniemi to Munkkivuori. The route extension strengthens cross‑city tram links and improves connections between key transport hubs along the outer ring of the central city.

Basic weekday headways: 20 minutes, at peak times 10 minutes
Bus 37 will run from Myyrmäki via Honkasuo and Malminkartano to Kannelmäki. From Myyrmäki station, the bus will follow its current route to Malminkartano. From Kartanonkaari, it will continue via Ruosilanmutka and Ruosilantie to Vihdintie. From Vihdintie, the bus will turn onto Kaupintie and continue to the Kaari shopping center on Kantelettarentie. The terminus will be on Pelimannintie.
The bus will connect with bus route 300 on Vihdintie, providing access to Ruskeasuo and Meilahti along the former route of bus 37. In addition, it will provide a connection to tram route 14 from Malminkartano.
The route change will allow us to meet residents’ wishes for a direct bus connection from Malminkartano to the Kaari shopping center. The shorter route will enable a more punctual and reliable service, making transfers smoother.
The current route of bus 37 between the city center and Vihdintie overlaps with several other routes, and its cost efficiency is relatively low. By changing the route to operate as a feeder service to bus routes 14 and 300 towards the central city, we will be able to increase peak‑hour service on the route in a cost‑neutral way, as the route length and round‑trip time will be reduced. Ten‑minute headways during peak hours will enable better transfer connections to trains at Malminkartano station. Connections from Malminkartano will become more versatile than at present with the introduction of a new connection to the Kaari shopping center.

Basic weekday headways: 20 minutes
Bus 52 will run from Kannelmäki station via Maununneva, Etelä-Haaga and Munkkivuori to Otaniemi. At its northern end, the bus will follow the current route of bus 42, but will turn from Hämeenlinnanväylä onto Metsäläntie. In Etelä-Haaga, the bus will replace the current service provided by bus 41 on Haagan urheilutie and in Riistavuori. From Eliel Saarisen tie onwards, the bus will follow the same route as at present.
Bus 52 will provide a connection from Maununneva to trams and trains, as well as serve school journeys to the Swedish language school in Munkkiniemi. Bus 41 will connect with trunk bus 400 on Hämeenlinnanväylä, providing a connection to the city center.
When the current route 42 is discontinued, journeys from Maununneva via Kaarelantie to the city center and Meilahti will require a transfer. The transfer will be from route 52 to route 400 on Hämeenlinnanväylä. To improve connections from Maununneva, further planning may consider introducing the Raitamaantie stop pair on Hämeenlinnanväylä for route 400.

Basic weekday headways:10 minutes
The route of bus 57 will not change, but its other terminus will move to Munkkivuori. From Ilmala, the bus will run via Hakamäentie, Vihdintie, Lapinmäentie and Huopalahdentie to Munkkivuori shopping center.
The current terminus in Munkkiniemi will be closed as the City of Helsinki has zoned the area for construction. Journeys from Munkkiniemi to, for example, Ilmala, Koskelantie and Viikki, will in the future require transfers. Shortening the route will allow us to improve punctuality and reliability without significantly impacting passenger experience.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes
Bus 59 will largely continue to operate as at present. At the eastern end of the route, the bus will run via Aleksis Kiven katu instead of Teollisuuskatu.
This change is made because we want to strengthen service on Teollisuuskatu by rerouting buses 500 and 510 to run via Teollisuuskatu. Teollisuuskatu is home to several workplaces and educational institutions, which is why trunk bus routes 500 and 510 efficiently serve commutes and school journeys from longer distances. On Aleksis Kiven katu, tram 9 and bus 59 provide a high level of service.

Basic weekday headways: 30 minutes
Bus 212 will run from Kauniainen to Laajalahti as it currently does, but it will terminate in Meilahti. This means it will no longer run via Töölö to Kamppi. The final location of the terminus in Meilahti will be decided later.
There are several constraints that limit the bus route’s operation as far as the city center. Passenger numbers on the route are low between Kamppi and Meilahti, as journeys on the route are mainly made to the Meilahti Hospital area. Tram routes 4, 5 and 14 operate between Meilahti and the city center, reducing the need for parallel bus services. Bus 212 has previously operated along Topeliuksenkatu and Runeberginkatu, which are now being prioritized mainly for tram services.

Basic weekday headways: 30 minutes, at peak times 20 minutes
Bus 213 will run from Kauklahti via Espoon keskus and Suvela to Helsinki as it currently does, but it will terminate in Meilahti. This means it will no longer run via Töölö to Kamppi. The final location of the terminus in Meilahti will be decided later.

Basic weekday headways: 15 minutes
The route of bus 506 will remain unchanged, but it will be shortened to terminate in Pasila. The terminus will be moved from Ruskeasuo to Pasila because trunk bus 500 runs to Ruskeasuo. The exact route in Pasila will depend on where the terminus will be located.
The shortened route will improve the punctuality and reliability of the route, as well as make it more cost-effective. Trunk bus 500 will continue to provide a direct connection from Ruskeasuo to Pasila. It is not reasonable that both buses would run to Ruskeasuo, as one route provides sufficient service to the area. A new neighborhood route, 35(K), will serve the inner parts of Ruskeasuo.

Basic weekday headways: 10 minutes (on the shared section of route 5 minutes)
Trunk buses 500 and 510(A) will be rerouted to run via Aleksis Kiven katu instead of Teollisuuskatu. Teollisuuskatu is home to several workplaces and educational institutions, which is why trunk bus routes 500 and 510 efficiently serve commutes and school journeys from longer distances. On Aleksis Kiven katu, tram 9 and bus 59 provide a high level of service.
At the western end of its route, bus 500 will no longer run to Munkkivuori. Instead, it will terminate on Nauvontie in Ruskeasuo. Towards Ruskeasuo, bus 500 will run via Mannerheimintie and Hakamäentie to Nauvontie. In the opposite direction, the bus will run from Nauvontie via Koroistentie to Mannerheimintie, where it will continue along the current route.
At its western end, the new route will replace the western section of bus route 506, which will terminate in Pasila. A lot of journeys are made from the Ruskeasuo and Pikku Huopalahti areas to Pasila station, which is also one of the destinations requested by residents in the area. The bus will no longer run to Munkkivuori, as tram route 13 will be extended from Pasila via Meilahti to Munkkivuori. Thus, a direct connection from Munkkivuori to Pasila will be retained. The walking distance to the nearest bus stop will increase slightly in the Tenholantie area.
Trunk route 510 will operate under two different route numbers: 510 and 510A. Bus 510 will follow its current route to Tapiola, but instead of continuing to Kivenlahti, it will run from Etelätuulentie to Westendinasema. Bus 510A will run to Kivelahti following the current route. Every other service will run to Westendinasema and every other to Kivenlahti.
On its current route along Länsiväylä, bus 510 has significantly fewer passengers than on the eastern end of the route. Terminating some services at Westendinasema allows services to be better targeted at the section of the route where demand is highest, improving the route’s cost‑effectiveness.

Neighborhood routes
Bus 32 will run from Pohjois-Haaga station via Lassila, the Kaari shopping center, Pohjois-Haaga and Etelä-Haaga to Riistavuori. The bus will depart from its current stop at the Hopeatie Service House and run via Pennikuja (Pohjois-Haaga station), Hopeatie, Kaupintie, Laurinniityntie, Niitynperäntie, Laurinniityntie, Kaupintie, Kantelettarentie, Näyttelijäntie, Ohjaajantie, Aino Acktén tie, Eliel Saarisen tie, Teuvo Pakkalan tie, Eliel Saarisen tie, Nuijamiestentie, Poutuntie, Krankantie, Santavuorentie , Nuijamiestentie, Huovitie (Haaga Health Centre), Ilkantie, Tunnelitie, Laajasuontie, Haagan pappilantie, Tunnelitie, Haagan urheilutie, Isonnevantie, Isonnevankuja to Riistavuori Service Centre.
The bus will provide service to, for example, the Hopeatie Service House, the Kaari shopping center, Haaga Health Centre and Riistavuori Service Centre.
The route combines sections of the current bus routes 31 and 32. In addition, some route sections will be withdrawn due to low passenger numbers. The bus will terminate in Riistavuori, as demand on the current route between Etelä‑Haaga and Munkkivuori has been low. In the future, the section between Etelä‑Haaga and Munkkivuori will be served by buses 41 and 52.

Bus 34 will run from Munkkivuori via Munkkiniemi, Kuusisaari and Lehtisaari to Kaskisaari. The bus will depart from the Munkkivuori shopping center and run via Raumantie, Ulvilantie, Professorintie, Laajalahdenti, Saunalahdentie, Pikkuniementie, Kuusisaarentie and Lehtisaarentie to Kaskisaarentie.
Bus 34K will operate off‑peak, making a loop in Munkkiniemi via Laajalahdentie, Tiilimäki, Tuulaspolku, Ritokalliontie, Tiilimäki, Tuulaspolku, Munkkiniemenranta and Saunalahdentie. In addition, it will call at Hiidenkiukaantie in Lehtisaari.
The bus will particularly serve school journeys from Kaskisaari, Lehtisaari and Kuusisaari to Munkkiniemi, as well as provide a connection from Ritolehto to Munkkivuori. The bus will not serve some of the stops along the current route 34 due to low passenger numbers.

The new neighborhood route 35 will run from the “Kuusitie” terminus on Mannerheimintie via Kiskontie and Tenholantie to Orton. Bus 35K will operate off-peak, running from Orton to the Munkkivuori shopping center via Tenholantie, Koroistentie, Korppaanmäentie, Vihdintie, Lapinmäentie, Niemenmäentie, Luuvaniementie, Niemenmäentie, Lapinmäentie and Naantalintie.
The route will primarily provide a feeder connection from Ruskeasuo to Mannerheimintie, connecting with bus and tram services, as the Tenholantie terminus will no longer be used by larger buses. The City of Helsinki’s goal is for the inner streets of Ruskeasuo to function as small‑scale local streets, where larger buses have limited ability to operate. Trunk bus 500 from Ruskeasuo to Pasila will depart from Nauvontie.

Bus 36 will run from Malminkartano via Konala, Pitäjänmäki, Lassila, Kannelmäki and Maununneva to Pirkkola. The bus will depart from the Neulastie stop in Malminkartano and run via Pihkatie, Kaarnatie, Kartanonmetsäntie, Malminkartanontie, Konalantie, Riukutie, Konalantie, Ristipellontie, Ajomiehentie, Konalantie, Kolsarintie, Vähäntuvantie, Konalantie, Pitäjänmäentie, Kaupintie, Kantelettarentie, Pelimannintie, Kaustisentie (Kannelmäki Health Centre), Pelimannintie, Klaneettitie, Soittajantie, Urkupillintie, Kanneltie, Vanhaistentie, Juoksuhaudantie, Vannetie, Ladonlukonpolku, Maununnevantie and Kaarelantie to Pirkkolan metsätie.
The bus will provide connections, for example, to the Ristikko shopping center, the Kaari shopping center, the Kannelmäki Health Center and the Pirkkola Sports Park. The bus will not serve some of the stops along the current route 36 due to low passenger numbers.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the planning!
Since autumn 2025, this website has served as the main platform for sharing updates on the phases of the West Helsinki route network review and telling about opportunities for participation.
After the Executive Board has made its decision on the network, we will publish the final report of the review on the blog. According to current information, the tramway infrastructure will be completed in phases, allowing changes to tram and bus routes to be introduced during 2029–2031.
