Easily combine different tickets for the same journey

Now you can combine different HSL tickets for the same public transport journey. You can combine tickets purchased using different payment methods.

For example, if you have a season ticket on your HSL card but no value to buy a single ticket for zones outside your season ticket, you can buy a single ticket in the HSL app or with contactless payment at a card reader and continue your journey.

You can combine tickets from 2 June

From 2 June 2026, HSL will make it possible to combine different tickets for one journey. You can combine tickets purchased using different payment methods.

Previously, combining tickets was not possible. You needed either a ticket that covered the entire journey or an zone extension ticket purchased alongside your season ticket to extend its travel area. As part of this change, zone extension tickets will be removed from the ticket selection.

How to combine tickets

In the HSL app

In the HSL app, you can combine all the tickets available in the app with each other.

For example, you can combine a season ticket with a multi-journey ticket, a single ticket with a season ticket, or a day ticket with a single ticket. You can also combine tickets purchased through other channels with tickets bought in the app, such as a single ticket purchased at a card reader.

On an HSL card

On an HSL card, you can combine a single ticket with your season ticket by selecting the zones in which you want to travel on the card reader. The card reader will sell you the appropriate single ticket using the value on your HSL card.

You can also buy a single ticket in the HSL app or with contactless payment at the card reader to complement the season ticket on your HSL card.

With contactless payment

You can combine a single ticket purchased with contactless payment at a card reader with a ticket purchased in the HSL app, or with a single ticket or season ticket on an HSL card.

You can also combine a contactless single ticket with a paper day ticket or single ticket if you want to travel outside the zones included on those tickets.

Remember this

If you use two tickets for the same journey, buy the buy a complementary ticket before your vehicle starts travelling to the first stop or station in the zone covered by the complementary ticket.

Example: If you have an AB season ticket and want to travel to zone C, buy a ticket that includes zone C while the vehicle is still in zone B.

How to make sure you have a valid ticket for your entire journey

When combining multiple tickets for one journey, buy a complementary ticket before your vehicle starts travelling to the first stop or station in the zone covered by the complementary ticket.

For example, if you have a season ticket for zones AB and want to travel to zone C, buy a BC single ticket before the vehicle starts travelling to the first stop or station in zone C. If you use the HSL app, make sure the ticket has been downloaded to your phone.

If you change vehicles during your journey, your ticket does not need to remain valid until the final stop of your journey. It is sufficient that your ticket is valid when you board the last vehicle you use or enter the paid area.

Frequently asked questions about combining tickets

When will zone extension tickets be discontinued, and why?

According to the current plan, zone extension tickets will be removed from HSL’s range of tickets on 2 June 2026. After that date, you will no longer be able to buy zone extension tickets.

The zone extension ticket was introduced in 2019 to allow travel outside the zones covered by a season ticket. However, its use has been limited because most customers already include all the zones they need on their season tickets. Removing zone extension tickets will simplify HSL’s range of tickets.

I have a season ticket on my HSL card. How and when should I buy a single ticket using the value on the card to add it to my season ticket?

To combine a single ticket with a season ticket on your HSL card, select the zones you wish to travel in at a card reader. The reader will sell you the appropriate single ticket when you use the value on your HSL card.

For example, if you have an AB season ticket and wish to travel to zone C, select zones ABC at the card reader, and the reader will sell you a BC ticket.

Please note that all single tickets are valid from the moment of purchase. If you add a single ticket to your season ticket, you must buy it before the vehicle you are travelling on begins its journey to the first stop or station in the zone included in the single ticket.

You must have a valid ticket throughout your journey. When you change from one vehicle to another, your ticket can expire during the last leg of your journey. It is enough that your ticket is valid when you board a vehicle or enter the Metro or ferry payment area.

I have a season ticket on my HSL card. How and when should I buy a single ticket using contactless payment to add it to my season ticket?

If there is no value on your HSL card, you can also buy a single ticket at a card reader using contactless payment. You must buy the ticket before the vehicle you are travelling on begins its journey to the first stop/station outside the zones included in your season ticket.

For example, if you want to buy a single ticket for zone C and add it to your AB season ticket using contactless payment, select zones BC in the card reader. Buy the ticket in zone B before the vehicle you are travelling on begins its journey to the first stop or station in zone C.

If you have an AB season ticket and travel to zone D and buy a single ticket with contactless payment, select zones BCD in the card reader. Buy the ticket in zone B before the vehicle you are travelling on begins its journey to the first stop or station in zone C.

Please note that if you don’t use value on your HSL card together with your season ticket, the card reader will sell you a ticket that includes the zone where the reader is located. For example, if you are in zone B, the reader will sell you a ticket that includes zone B. In this case, you won’t be able to buy, for instance, a single ticket for zones CD. This is due to a technical restriction in the card readers.

For example, if you want to buy a single ticket for zone C and add it to your AB season ticket, select zones BC in the HSL app. All single tickets always include at least two zones.
