More tram services to Jätkäsaari on routes 1T and 8T in October

Weekend service to Jätkäsaari will improve in early October when tram routes 1T and 8T start running to the West Terminal on Saturdays and Sundays.

Weekend service to Jätkäsaari will improve in early October when tram routes 1T and 8T start running to the West Terminal (Länsiterminaali) on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tram 8 will run under route number 8T to the West Terminal on Saturdays and Sundays from 7 October. The tram will serve the Saukonpaasi terminus. Instead, the tram will run via the "Saukonkatu" and "Kanariankatu" stops to the West Terminal. The tram will provide a faster connection from the WEst Terminal to Ruoholahti Metro Station.

Tram 1 will run under route number 1T to the West Terminal on Saturdays and Sundays. The tram will not serve Fredrikinkatu and Eira on weekends. The tram will run via Bulevardi to Hietalahdenranta, from where it will continue along Tyynenmerenkatu to the West Terminal.

There is no turning loop at the West Terminal that would allow the tram to turn at the terminus. Therefore, having arrived at the terminal, tram 7 will continue from the terminal under route number 9 and vice versa. Correspondingly, tram 8T will continue from the terminal under route number 1T in the direction of Bulevardi and tram 1T will continue under route number 8T in the direction of Ruoholahti.

The next changes to tram services in Jätkäsaari are expected to take place at the year end when a terminus will be completed on Tahitinkatu. The terminus will be served by tram 8 on weekdays.

Background to the arrangement

The changes are due to population growth in the area and increased number of ferry passengers. Trams 7 and 9 have had additional services to the West Terminal around passenger ferry arrival and departure times. However, this is not cost-effective enough and the arrangement has not really benefited the local residents. By improving service supply, we aim to meet the peaks in demand caused by ferry passengers, thus freeing up more space for local residents.

The withdrawal of the weekend service of tram 1 from Eira will not significantly weaken public transport provision in the area as trams 3 and 6 run close to Tehtaankatu. In addition, trunk route buses 20 and 30 run to Töölö.
