Travel habit survey

We study the travel habits of residents in the Helsinki region every few years through an extensive survey. Travel habit surveys have been conducted regularly since 1966. The most recent survey was carried out in 2023.

The survey is conducted using travel diaries

Respondents record information on all journeys they make during their assigned survey day.

The survey collects information, for example, on how many journeys residents make each day, where people travel from and to, and which modes of transport they use.

We conduct the survey by randomly selecting a group of residents from the Population Information System. Selected participants receive an invitation by post.

All modes of transport are included

The travel habit survey collects data on all modes of transport, including private cars, public transport, cycling and walking.

We use the results, for example, in preparing the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan, as well as in maintaining and developing traffic forecast models.

The results are also used by other organizations involved in transport planning and decision-making in the region.
