U line services

U line services are bus services whose routes extend beyond the HSL area. You can identify U line buses by the U sign on the front of the bus. In the Journey Planner, U line bus timetables are marked with “U-line”.

HSL tickets are accepted on U line buses for journeys beginning and ending within the HSL area.  To travel on U line buses, you can use a season ticket on your HSL card, a single ticket purchased with value on your HSL card, or any ticket available in the HSL app. HSL tickets purchased with contactless payment and QR-coded single and day tickets purchased in advance at a service point are not accepted on U line buses.

For journeys beginning or ending outside the HSL area, you need a ticket for the whole journey issued by the operator of the route. Tickets issued by U line operators are not valid on other HSL services, meaning that you cannot use them to transfer to another HSL mode of transport.

Adult or child ticket?

When travelling on HSL tickets, HSL’s age limits apply, i.e. child tickets are for children aged 7 to 17 years and adult tickets for people aged 18 and over. Children under 7 years of age travel for free if they are travelling with someone using an HSL ticket.

Different age limits may apply when travelling on operators’ tickets.

Prams, scooters and pets on U line buses

Prams, scooters and pets are usually not allowed on U line buses free of charge. The bus operators’ own regulations are applied e.g. to the transport of prams. There are no separate spaces for prams on U line buses.

In addition, passengers travelling with a child aged between 0 and 6 years in a pram, pushchair or wheelchair are not entitled to travel without a valid ticket.

U line buses in the Journey Planner

Timetables for U line buses are available in the Journey Planner but real-time location information is not available for U line buses. Consequently, the Journey Planner and timetable displays at bus stops show scheduled departure times for U line buses, and information about delays to services is not available. In the Journey Planner, U line bus timetables are marked with “U-line”.

Planning

Most of the U line services are commercially operated and bus operators decide on the operation of the services and timetables. Some routes (or some services) are procured by the Uusimaa ELY Center.

Information about service changes is often available later than for HSL services.
