Tram services to be suspended on Runeberginkatu at the end of August

There will be no tram services on Runeberginkatu in Töölö from Monday 31 August due to the construction of a new tramway. Tram routes 1, 2 and 8 are expected to be diverted until the end of 2027. Buses will provide alternative service during the tram service disruption.

Changes to tram services from Monday 31 August

  • Tram 1 will run via Mannerheimintie between Ylioppilastalo and the Opera. On weekends, tram 1T will run to West Harbour.
  • Tram 2 will also run via Mannerheimintie between Ylioppilastalo and the Opera. It will not run via the Central Railway Station and Mikonkatu. Instead, it will run via Aleksanterinkatu. This change is made to improve the flow of tram services in the city center, as services on tram route 5 increase.
  • In the winter timetable season, trams 4 and 10 will run every 10 minutes instead of every 7–8 minutes. The reduced frequency will help ensure smooth operation on Mannerheimintie, even with more routes running via it than usual.
  • The route of tram 5 will be extended, and it will run approximately every 10 minutes daily. The tram will run from the Tahitinkatu terminus in Jätksaari to Ruoholahti, Kamppi and the city center. It will replace tram 8 between Jätkäsaari and Ruoholahti, and provide more frequent service from Katajanokka. On weekends, tram 5T will run to West Harbour instead of Tahitinkatu. From there, it will continue under route number 1T.
  • The route of tram 8 will be shortened. It will run only between Arabia and the Opera. The terminus will be on Ruusulankatu, west of the Opera junction.

There will also be other changes to tram services from the same date, as trams 1 and 7 will resume running along Mäkelänkatu. In addition, the terminus of tram 13 will move to Ilmala due to a façade renovation in Länsi-Pasila.

Bus services will continue to run along Runeberginkatu as usual

There will be no changes to bus services on Runeberginkatu. Route and timetable information for the autumn will be made available in the Journey Planner later in the summer. We will provide separate updates on changes to bus routes and stop relocations during the works.

When planning diversions and other special arrangements, we prioritize ensuring that there is enough passenger capacity, even if some journeys require transfers. Passenger numbers are particularly high in Jätkäsaari, but with the extension of tram route 5, trams will be able to carry the usual number of passengers towards Ruoholahti, Kamppi and the city center. An alternative would have been to operate a replacement bus along the route of tram 8 but this would have been relatively more expensive and would not have been able to carry as many passengers as the tram. For cost reasons, it is not possible to operate both a replacement bus and extend tram route 5. Changing at Kamppi will increase journey times by around five minutes in most cases.

West Helsinki Light Rail Project: new tramways, cycle paths and utility infrastructure

The West Helsinki Light Rail Project involves building and upgrading tramways, cycle paths and utility infrastructure in western Helsinki, as well as improving the street environment. On Runeberginkatu, the number of bus services will decrease in the future to around one-fifth of the current level as tram services increase. This will also create more space for pedestrians and cyclists. Read more about the West Helsinki Light Rail project on the City of Helsinki Infrastructure Programme website.

HSL plans public transport diversion routes and provides information about service changes. Add your favorite routes in the HSL app and enable notifications to receive updates as soon as they are available.  Once the new tramway is completed, there will be changes to tram and bus routes in line with HSL’s West Helsinki Route Network Plan
